A bistro that isn’t serving plates yet, but still feeds a town’s need for connection. We head upstairs in downtown Hanford to tour Forgo Bistro with founder Marci Ocampo, and her story is the kind that only makes sense when you hear the turns: selling tamales during COVID, pivoting into party rentals and mini golf, then building a creative event venue designed for workshops, gatherings, and real community.
Marci breaks down what Forgo Bistro actually offers today, from the canvas bar and grab-and-go workshop kits to weekly nights that invite people in without pressure. We talk about why the space is intentionally built around mental health, mindfulness, and being present, plus how the room transforms into a party venue where guests can create something together instead of just sitting around. If you’ve been searching for a Hanford event venue, things to do in Hanford, or family-friendly indoor activities in Kings County, this conversation puts a new spot on your radar.
We also run through key Hanford community news and the local events calendar, including upcoming civic meetings, parade planning, and Veterans Day celebrations, then close with a full Hanford area sports report featuring football, volleyball, water polo, and more.

Meet Marcy From Forgo Bistro
SPEAKER_03One of the exciting new businesses in downtown Hanford is a place that I found called Forgo Bistro. And for those of you who aren't familiar with the site, it's at 123 West 7th Street, uh right uh above the Patty Dance Studio, not too far from 111 Coffee. And its website presents the business as more of a traditional bistro, uh, but it's actually a great place for uh creative workshops and hands-on activities, uh, private celebrations and community gatherings. And we are so fortunate to have with us today Marcy El Campo. How are you doing, Marcy?
SPEAKER_00Hi, how are you?
SPEAKER_03Hey, Marcy, so tell us a little bit about yourself and how you got involved in the event venue business.
SPEAKER_00Wow. Um the truth is, um, I want it to be a bistro. I want it to cook. Um what we originally originally started off by me um selling food. And um, it happened right during COVID. It was um a lot of people were doing that, and I did too. And I sold tamales, and um, I actually went all downtown um selling my tamales to the bars like Huggies and Sequoia. And um I had trusted friends that would go and um a lot of realtors. It was a really good time, but then everything went back to normal and I had to like adjust and I'm like, okay. So then I went and did my research on like how to actually open um a food venue, just anything of that sort, food truck. I just wanted to sell my food. Um, and then um it was really a lot of a lot of money. So um then I found out about college food, and so my husband's like, well, you know, let's pivot and let's do party rentals. And I said, okay. So we got our first set of chairs and our first set of tables, and it was cool. Um, and then I started looking into like how to do college food. And I was my idea was I was gonna have a catering, a little baby catering and my party rentals. Then um it was my 30th birthday, so um, and we just my husband, you know, he made me my first um the first lane, the first um golfing lane. And I was like, this was so much fun. And we threw a party at my sister's house, and she's like, wow, she was you should rent those out. And I said, Okay. So and we started um advertising and like, oh, we have party rentals and mini golf. And um, and then my husband made the cornhole, and then we started, um, he wanted to do a woodworking event, and so he's like, I'm gonna take the cornhole. And so I'm like, okay, and so we just had it there as a display. And I said, Well, what if we make it a game? And so um we played it as a game, and that was, you know, it was cool, but we weren't making profit. We weren't, we were just like seeing, you know, how that works. So um I I went to an event with a friend, and she had the idea of making it um like an amusement type of game, like play for a dollar to win a prize type of thing. And um it worked, and we ended up going all over um Vaselia, um, all over the place with our party rentals or tables or chairs. I mean, and we started picking up as a party rental business, and it was just it just led to bigger. But um we had like, okay, uh we wanted a small storage, and we did get small storage. Um, but then I got sick and then I I got really like just disappointed. But um my sister and my brother-in-law like are like our biggest, they were my only friends type of thing. And so um my brother in law's like, hey, what's you know, he he's he was in the Navy, and so he's like, when I get out, let's make it a whole business. I'm just oh whatever, you know, like you know, you're just playing. So he's like, no, no, no, for real. I'm like, okay, well, I got sick, and I got really, really sad when I got sick. And um he's like, you know, um, let's just um for real, let's do it.
Pivoting From Food To Venue
SPEAKER_00So he came back, he got out like in May, and um like uh he's only been out like a year and so last year, and then we went downtown because I was like really stubborn, like I wanted a business in town. I'm from Hanford, I grew up in Hanford. Why am I going outside of town to do business? Like I was really like, I need to be in town. So we went, we looked at a couple of locations, and you know, um they're filled now, so that's you know, that's good for them. But I was like, no, that's not good, no. And then um my brother was like, okay, we'll find a perfect place, you know. And so I'm like, okay, well, so I gave up. I kind of got sad again. Like, I'm like, you know what? It's just too much for me right now. So then um my sister, she actually graduated um with her master's in human um um services in September, and we went to Vegas, and we're sitting there having lunch and dinner, and I'm I mean, I'm telling you, I'm fascinating with food, I'm fascinating with service, the service work, the whole industry. And we had such an experience in Vegas, and we're sitting there, and my brother in law said, Marcy, let's do it. I said, I don't know. Like, because we could be here, like we could be somebody cool. Like we went to a lot of cool places, and he's like, look at they just had an idea and they just did it. And I said, Okay, like I'll start looking again. So, you know, um, I came home, I told my husband, like, you know, um, Julius wants to really open the business. And he's like, Well, you know, we find something, we'll find something. So that was in September, you know. Um, I got really like, I went and chased events, I got really like um invested again. I started like, okay, this is what we're gonna do next year. Next year's the year. And then Patty posted um in December that she had these openings and it was all empty. Every there was everything was open. And he my husband sent to me, and I was like, no, like I like, no. And so then um, you know, I did um it was it was like I prayed on it and I really, really had to think about it. And I didn't sh tell my brother-in-law or my sister, and then he shared it with me, and then I was like, Okay, so I'm like, um, we'll go look. And so he's like, go make an appointment. So I made an appointment. Mind you, um, he was working still, um, he was working a lot during that time, and um he's like, just you know, figure it out and then we'll talk about it. So I'm like, okay. So I met with Patty, she showed us everything, and I kind of told her the vision that I had. And I'm like, honestly, I just I want a place where I could do everything I'm already doing, and eventually I could have the beastal side, and eventually I just need the place for everything that I'm already doing. She's like, I have a spot, like I think so. I was again at something so small. So this room, it was just something I just wanted like a an office space. She's like, let me take you to this room. And she showed me the yellow room. And I looked, and then my husband's like, and I was like, Yeah. I was like, he nodded, and I was like, oh, I'm like, it uh no way, no way. And so um, we talked, um, she just gave me like ballpark numbers, and I said, Okay. And um something I took back with my family, and it was, it was truly like I prayed on it, and I'm like, you know what, God, if it's gonna happen. Hey, it's gonna happen. So um, and it's just so funny because God knows, you know. And I and it's so scary, you know, like it's so scary because if you don't follow the path, you know that you feel it, a discernment. And um I went and told um my brother, he came in and he took a weekend off, and we he came in, looked at the whole place, and my sister came. And for my sister to agree to my crazy idea, I was like, she came up, and they're like, Yeah, she came and looked at the place. I'm like, Okay. I'm like, so that my sister's like, if she says it's a good idea, I always like, okay, I'm not crazy because she's always been my right mind. And so um she sat us both down, like me and my brother brother-in-law and my husband, and we all sat there and we're like, are we gonna do this? We need to let her know um before she shows it to somebody else. And we almost missed it. We almost lost our chance. And so I'm like, it's okay, it's okay. We'll just, you know, at least we know what we want now. And then um, she's like, no, she goes, Um, if you guys have your deposit in, um, it's yours.
SPEAKER_03Fantastic. That's great. Great, Marcy. Tell me uh the name Forgo Beastro. I know you get this question every single day. So tell us about the name and how you came up with the name.
SPEAKER_00Okay.
The Meaning Behind Forgo Bistro
SPEAKER_00So Forgo Bistro. So Forgo means to go without. And maybe I am using it wrong in a sentence, or I don't know, but um, I was, you know, Googling, I was trying to find something strong. Um, because like I said, I was thinking of places all through town, and there was a spot on Fargo that I was like, I want that place. And um it's I don't even think it any I I think it still might be available, but I was like, no, no, no. Um I don't know what turned me away from that, but um God, like I'm here, you know. Um, but um Fargo means to go without. And the reason I start cooking and selling food is because I um I'm gluten-free. So when I went gluten-free, I was really upset. Um, I thought I was really sick. Um, and it was a change in my diet, uh, my health, everything. And um I was like, man, but I missed out on so much food. Like I like to eat and I like to like enjoy myself, you know. So I'm like, you're not gonna take things away. Um I actually went to culinary school and because I was like, I need to learn to cook, I need to learn to eat new again. So I I went, um, I did a certificate program, and that's what changed the whole name. So I started off as a whole different name when I was selling tamales, but then after um I went and tried with the county, they're like, You can't be doing that. I said, okay. So I was like, let me rebrand and um re, you know, redo myself and think of a solid name that truly like means what my business means, like what I'm doing. And I'm like, I'm going without eating the things I want to eat. I'm not happy with the things I want to eat. I don't drink. I my whole like life at the moment changed. And I was like, um, I need to like figure, you know, uh figure out a good name for a business. That means I'm going to sell gluten-free food and have non-alcoholic items because the idea was always to have a bistro. Like I wanted something quaint, something cute. I um I grew up around food. So I kind of had an idea of like what I wanted. And it was always like this bistro style, um, like very um posh, you know, good food. And um forgo came up, and I was like, Forgo, forgo, bistro, and that's where the whole like forgo bistro, like that's that's how I when you see the letters like that, that's how in my head is saying.
SPEAKER_03Okay. So you've got the name. Okay, you've talked a lot about what you want to do, and we'll get to more of that in just a few minutes, because I know you do want to talk about the food, the food part of it. But what is Fargo Bistro? What's
Workshops Built For Mental Health
SPEAKER_03available for people up here?
SPEAKER_00So um uh Patty's great because um I came to her and I'm like, so we have all these ideas, and she's like, Wow, you have a bistro services. And I'm like, you're right, I do have a good menu. So anytime I try to put anything out about what Forgo does, I do it in a menu style as a aloe out to me and the community. Because when we first started, I was like, oh, where's the bistro? Where's the bistro? But now it's kind of being understood, like you they don't have food, but they have workshops.
SPEAKER_03Okay, so let's let's let's talk about. I'm looking here at the sign of all the things that you offer. What are some of your popular popular activities that you've had in here?
SPEAKER_00Well, um, my sister actually we have our canvas bar, and each one of those um canvases, so we have hats, we have glass. So we have an etching um workshop, a canvas workshop where you um place your decals on your hats, um, a beating workshop where there, I didn't even know there was that much um beating you can do, but there's so much you could do. Um a wood, um, a wood shop workshop, um, what else? Um, a fairy garden workshop. But you know, it wasn't just like let's just do workshops. It was all with the intent of mental health. So we advocate uh strongly about mental health. And um my sister wanted something to where it's not that we're teaching you to draw or color, whatever. Um, you're not just beating, it's being mindful and just being present and using the space as a safe space. So if you ever join one of our workshops, there is an ambience, there's music um to match the occasion. Um, and it's all um through uh you're not just given uh art project, you're given um skills. Yeah. And so we went into that with a whole different idea of how to handle a workshop because we knew what our needs were, and uh, we actually were doing this a lot with our friends and family. So we would host um little gatherings and um where we were just it was how we got through a lot of things, especially like I mean, family's family, you know, and I mean this with my family. So a lot of things have happened, but we sat there together and we um we made things. We made art. We made um if you go inside, you'll see on the above the blue curtains, all of those pictures were made by family members that we have been collecting. Yeah, we've been collecting them for like a year, and uh everything here is something that somebody um in a family, like this table, it was my grandma's table. We all choked up, but this is my grandma's table, and um she sold her house and um she's like, Do you want the table? I'm like, Well, yeah, it's like kind of like the last of our like kids, you know. Um, there's a uh picture there, and that is from an old town in New Mexico. That's where my um my great grandpa lived, and my grandma, she put that uh um, it was a family reunion, and that was a blown-up picture. I'm like, damn, I just says so well. And it's like a representation of our family in our location. So um, so yeah, everything that we do is um for a reason. Um, so the workshops are not just um, and I know that sometimes it looks like, oh, yeah, they're just having workshops, but it's always with the intent or something that we thought of like, you know what? I think this is a good way to share this message, or um this is how I it just it comes together. Yeah. Um that that's okay. Monday, we have um a free family activity night. So we have um family game night. And um, once again, all things that we have practiced and learned together. Um, it's just gaming. Um we have every game we could think of. Um, and there's an ongoing Dungeons and Dragons game that's been happening every Monday night. And the group is getting bigger, and it sounds like so much fun. Um, I still haven't got the hang of it. I s I just, you know, observe and um, but I love to see everyone using the space. Um, and it's nice to see like we have a um a couple of um follow and son um duos that come up just to play um a game of checkers, like and they have a good time, they're laughing, and um, that makes me happy because that's that's what we do at home a lot. Um, and so I was like, why not share that, you know, uh memory experience? Because we we are horrible about how many games we have and how competitive we are. We are so bad, like Thanksgiving, we are horrible. Um, so we um it is a free night, um, only because we want everyone to use our place as a safe space. So we're all about family.
SPEAKER_03Um what about the other nights?
SPEAKER_00We have Wednesday, it's work in progress. So um that one is an open studio. My sister, my little sister, she does a full takeover and nobody bothers her. And she um uh invites you up to create. She sews, um, she she's a an artist, so she does digital art, regular art, uh, whatever regular art I could, it's just painting. She does that. Um, creating, crafting. I mean, she's here and she has all the tools ready. If there's something you need help with, or you just want to come up and just use our space, let us know. We put a table out. Um, if you just it's the only opportunity I think you'll ever have to have free. So that's kind of the idea of it. Um, but Friday night is um our big night. That is our workshop night, that is our enrichment studio night. Um, and we're it's it's growing. We have um the art class by Inshak and Design. That's my sister's, and then my class, Marcefina's Um Cooking. And it's um a steam-based program that I have created. And it's um actually our first go-around um is tomorrow and it's people are excited. I'm excited, so um, but this one is newly this month and we've been put um advertising, pushing it. And always um Monday, Wednesday, Friday when we are open, our canvas bar is fully open. And what the canvas bar is is all our workshops are available for grab and go. So if there's something that maybe you missed or you saw, um, you come pick up and we'll package it for you, or we'll help you do it now um if you would like to. Um and you create something from one of the decals already just printed, or um, maybe I'm saying that wrong. My sister's gonna kill me. Um, the vinyls and um we'll help you create that here. Um or um you could book a workshop now for later. Um, however, but we have um everything ready for you to grab and go. And then the boutique's open. And the boutique is nothing but um vendors from our community who have um trusted us to advertise for them. So yeah.
SPEAKER_03And
Parties, Vendors, And One-Stop Events
SPEAKER_03on the tour, uh you showed me the other room that's available for parties, and we we have this discussion about you know, everybody talks about El Nino and all this rain. I would think if you're a parent with small children or whatever, this is the place to bring them.
SPEAKER_00Yes. So in the midst of um workshops, we actually encourage um our guests to use um our workshops for their parties. So we have the venue and we have like everything. So we have the venue, we have the music, we have the activities, and my favorite story is there was an activity, um, um uh actually a birthday party that happened and um the family haven't seen each other in a while. And it was the the ladies like oh 50th birthday, I'm not sure. Um, but she was like, I want something for them to do. Do you have something for them to do? And we're like, yeah, we could do um um cups and um so we put together our kits and um my sister went in and she led the class and um it was nice, beautiful. They ate, they laughed, they had a good time, and then they cleaned up, and then the lady comes out, she's like, I'm so surprised, nobody fucked. And so I was like, oh no, that's that's it. Um and so yeah, so the idea is like we have um and before you know um we could connect you to if you don't want um the items we have, or we need a different type of picture or different type of um sound. We know DJs, we know photographers, we know um we we have like a good group of um vendors that we like to reach out to to help make your dream party happen. And the things that have happened in that room, I wish I could take pictures of everything because they have had so much parties. And the thing though is like nobody knows, you know, and you're having these beautiful parties, you're taking these pictures, and it's like, where is that at? And that's what I wanted. And I know us being upstairs, sometimes everybody's like, Oh, but it's upstairs. But my joke is once you're up, you don't want to leave, you know, and it's kind of um you just jump in, you have a good time, and um, but that's kind of what the workshops happen too, is because we wanted to make sure that we had party favors, um, workshops for you to do, we have um event rentals, activities, and uh we wanted to be everything that we were already looking for. Instead of piecing everything together, it's like, well, we are a one-stop shop, you know? And um, my little sister actually did not want to do balloons. So we offer balloons, we offer um table decorations, we offer party favors, custom party favors, um, anything, custom invitations. Um, I'm ordained. I can marry you. Um, what else can we do? Um we off-site rentals, off-site events. Um we've done planning of um balloon artists um outside of town, inside of town, um workshops still. But what I mean ideally is um for whatever you could think of, use it for.
SPEAKER_03Um let's talk about the bistro side of it because I know in your heart I can tell you really want to get into the bistro side of s of of food and tell us a little bit about the future plans that include Hanford, and then I understand you're gonna be branching out a little bit possibly.
Cooking Classes And Catering Next
SPEAKER_00Well, um, so right now, um, once again, I I I talk and I I do like to make sure um I ask questions beforehand. And we're recently um added on a um a cooking class. So I have a cooking class. Um actually um I have it here, but it's um more just the science of cooking, um, just the the fun parts that you don't think about that are fun and just um gathering and community, just being together. So that's what's happening here where um but I did have to it took me a little bit to get to um this spot because I want to make sure um I was okay with the county to do it here. And the county's great because um they listen to me, they hear me out, and um they actually um um suggested that I reach out to a kitchen anymore and um which has worked out because I'm allowed to do the things I want to do here and there. So I feel like you know what? Um if this is not so Keynes County, I don't know what it is, you know. I'm able to still be um here in my hometown. I still get to branch out to Lemoir, which I love because my brother-in-law is Navy and we are a Navy family, you know. So for sure. It just makes sense that we are doing business there and here. So it's all combined together, but we are going to be able to um after next month cater out to not only our events but everywhere else. So yeah, that's all glimmer-free Mexican food. Um, and it's just like everything that we wanted is coming together, and it's took us a little bit to get to um everything, but it's kind of molded itself, don't see.
SPEAKER_03That's that's great. That's great, Marcy. Marcy, you have a pretty active social media presence. I know uh that's how I found out about uh Forgo Bistro is on your uh Instagram page, but uh how can people find out more about what you do here?
SPEAKER_00So we post um online at www for um www.forgo bistro.com. And um we have our forgo bistro uh Instagram and Facebook, so it's at Forgo Bistro. And um yeah, we post there. Um a Shaking Design Shop is my sister. She hosts all of our um in-house workshops, and that's where um she collaborates with a lot of different vendors that are here. So um she posts on there, and then um Marce Finas is what we are going to be opening as our catering name. So it's gonna be Marta um Marcefinus on Instagram. Um and yeah, but there's more to come for that. And if you follow Forgo Bistro, you'll be able to find um more information about that and when we're going to be able to fully launch. But um the idea at the end of the day is for us to forgo the ordinary and gather the bistro, let us take all the worry away, let us cook for you, let us um decorate for you, just come party, make memories, and use our space, you know.
SPEAKER_03Marcy, I am so impressed by your heart for this business model that you've um been wanting to share with the community. And it it Hanford needs more people like you. And I want to thank you for joining us today. And uh I I wish you the best of luck in everything that you do, and I can't wait to see what's next.
SPEAKER_00Thank you. Yes.
SPEAKER_03And
Hanford Area Fall Sports Report
SPEAKER_03now it's time for Hanford Insider Sports with Eric Bentley.
SPEAKER_02We've got a busy fall sports report, so let's get right to it. The football regular season wrapped up last week, and the Halloween scariness came a day early for the Hanford High Football team as the Bullpups watched Lamore hoist the milk can when the clock hit zero last Friday. The Tigers defensive coordinator Alan Perryman was on the Bullpup coaching staff last year, and maybe some of that knowledge was helpful for Lamore as the Tigers' defense really frustrated the high-powered Bullpups offense all game long. Lamore led 27-8 with nine minutes left, and Hanford High would mount a rally, but it wasn't enough as the Tigers emerged victorious 29-22. Now, obviously, losing a rivalry game is not ideal. However, it might have given the Bullpups a realistic chance at a section title as Hanford High avoided the bump to the D1 AA playoffs and will be the three seed in the D1A bracket. A first round matchup with Sanger, who the Bullpups beat 28-24 on the road in the first game of the year, will be at Neighbor Bowl this Friday at 7 P.M. And the Sierra Pacific football team closed out their regular season strong with a 38-26 win over Fowler to finish with a 4-1 record in league play. The Golden Bears led 24-13 at halftime and added a pair of second half scores to maintain the cushion to the finish line. Sierra Pacific has been playing some good football in the back half of their season and were rewarded for it with a nine-seed in the Division V bracket. The playoff matchup against eight-seed Sanger West will also be a rematch as the Hornets got the better of the Golden Bears in their regular season meeting, 28-27, back on September 18th. Should the Golden Bears come away victorious, they'll see top seed at Foothill in round two. The end of the road came for local volleyball in the playoffs as Sierra Pacific and Hanford West both fell last week. Sierra Pacific earned the seven seed in Division V, which gave them a first-round bye, starting their playoff action Tuesday at home versus ten seed Kern Valley. The Golden Bears got off to a dominant start with a 25-9 victory in set one, but the Bronx would win two of the next three before Sierra Pacific slammed the door shut 15-8 in the fifth to secure the match and advanced to the quarterfinals. Unfortunately, it was a quick exit for the Golden Bears there, losing in straight sets to two seed North from Bakersfield. Still a successful season for the Sierra Pacific volleyball team, finishing 19 and 11 overall and champions of the Tri-County Sequoia League. And unseeded Hanford West volleyball gave 10-seed Cabrillo a run for their money in round one of the D4 playoff, pushing the conquistadors to five sets with a back and forth hard-fought effort, but eventually the Huskies fell in the deciding fifth, 15-13. Water polo playoff brackets were released last week, and three Hanford teams will see postseason action in the pool. The Sierra Pacific girls team are the highest ranked of the three, earning a seven seed in Division II. This pits that the Golden Bears against ten seed Morrow Bay for their first round matchup in Hanford on Tuesday. Should Sierra Pacific come away victorious in that game, they would play at Atascadero on Thursday. In Boyswater polo, Sierra Pacific and Hanford West both earned first-round bytes, but also hit a draw that potentially pits the Crosstown rivals against each other in the quarterfinals. After a strong regular season, the Sierra Pacific Boys are a two-seed in D three and will face the winner of 15-seed Cabrillo and unseeded Centennial in round two on Wednesday. And after going 6-0 in Tri-County Sequoia League play, the Hanford West Boys water polo team is the seven seed in D three. The Huskies will await the winner of 10-seed Independence and unseeded Liberty in round two. Should Sierra Pacific and Hanford West both win their Wednesday games, the two would face each other at Sierra Pacific for the right to advance to the semifinals. The Golden Bears won both regular season matchups a month ago. And a couple of other fall sports playoff updates. The strong fall continues across Sierra Pacific athletics, and congratulations are in order for Bailey Bush, who won the Girls Golf D three individual title, shooting a 90 at Lamore Golf Course last week, while the Golden Bears as a team finished third out of the eight playoff teams. Also, tennis updates can be hard to come by, but it is worth noting that the Hanford High Girls tennis team made the D5 playoffs. The seven-seed Bullpubs took down ten-seed Corcoran in round one last Tuesday before falling to two-seed Selma in the quarterfinals on Thursday. And we'd like to close with a few shout-outs in youth football. The Hanford 12U Dogs are headed to the D2 championship after getting the win in last week's game. Jacoby Cayetano ran and threw for a touchdown, while Anthony Mendoza and Lamar Small also found the end zone for the Dogs. Defensively, Cayetano made an impact as well, tallying three sacks, and teammate Noah Kuna also had three sacks. The Dogs will take on the Central Ravens on Saturday in Delano for the D2 championships. And congratulations to the John F. Kennedy Jr. High Flag football team for finishing their undefeated season off with a Yosemite Athletic League Championship.
