A City Council meeting can feel like a blur until you hear what actually changed and what it means for your day-to-day life in Hanford. Councilmember Nancy Howze gives us a focused June 16 recap that starts with a boost to public safety: Chief Huddleston introduces six new Hanford Police Department employees and we welcome K9 Ace, a two-and-a-half-year-old German Shepherd from Hungary who is already supporting officers in the field. If you care about staffing, dispatch capacity, and how a city strengthens response teams, this opening segment makes the updates easy to follow.

From there, we dig into community priorities and the tricky reality of timing a ballot measure. We break down the community polling around a potential recreational funding measure, including support for expanding Hen Valley Park and building a multi-generational community center. The headline: residents like the ideas, but the numbers are not quite strong enough to confidently push a measure this year. We explain why Council votes unanimously to postpone a potential ballot measure until 2028, and how that window creates time for deeper community engagement and a stronger, more fiscally responsible plan.

We also celebrate what makes Hanford proud, honoring Sierra Pacific girls’ track and field as CIF Division III champions and recognizing Hanford West varsity softball as state Division III champions. Then we close with civic essentials: consolidating the municipal election with the November 3 general election, what it means for City Council Districts A, D, and E, the August 7 candidate nomination deadline, and Measure H-funded road maintenance contracts including fiberized slurry overlay and safety-focused cover adjustments. Subscribe for the final recap, share this with a neighbor, and leave a review with one question you want City Hall to answer next.

Welcome And Recap Roadmap

SPEAKER_00

You're listening to a special episode of the Hanford Insider Podcast, featuring a wrap-up of recent City Council actions with Council Member Nancy Howes. Hi everyone, I'm Councilmember Nancy Howes. Thank you for joining us for part two of our June 16th City Council recap. We had a very full agenda, so we are breaking this down to make sure you get all the highlights. Stay tuned because we will have one more final recap coming out soon to cover the rest of the meeting.

New Police Hires And K9 Ace

SPEAKER_00

We kicked off our study session with some wonderful news for our public safety team. Chief Huddleston introduced six new employees to the Hanford Police Department. Please join me in welcoming Officer Alex Arciga, who transitioned from our Explorer and Cadet programs, Community Service Officer Armando Ornielis, who is currently a lieutenant in our explorer program, and three new dispatchers, Amanda Dominguez, Haisha Crumpton, and Oscar Escalera. And a special welcome to our newest four-legged member, K9 Ace, a two and a half-year-old German Shepherd from Hungary who is already proving to be a valuable tool for our police officers.

Recreation Measure Polling And 2028 Plan

SPEAKER_00

Later in the study session, we received a presentation regarding community pooling for a potential recreational funding measure. While the results showed that a majority of our residents support expanding Hen Valley Park and building a multi-generational community center, the support wasn't quite at the level needed to guarantee success this year. Because we want to be fiscally responsible and sure we have the strongest plan possible, the city council voted unanimously to postpone any potential ballot measure until 2028. This gives us more time to engage with you, the community.

Honoring Championship Student Athletes

SPEAKER_00

It was also a night of celebration as we recognized some incredible local athletes. First, we honored the Sierra Pacific High School girls' track and field team for winning the CIF Division III Championship, the first in school history. They broke a staggering 21 school records this season. We also celebrated the Hanford West varsity softball team, our new state Division III champions. These young women showed incredible perseverance through adversity to bring home that state title. We are so proud of both teams representing Hanford so well on the state stage.

Election Consolidation And Candidate Deadlines

SPEAKER_00

Moving to the consent calendar, we officially authorized the consolidation of our municipal election with the statewide general election on November 3rd. Please take note, City Council Districts A, D, and Eve will be on the ballot. If you are interested in running, candidate nominations are due by 5 p.m. on August 7th.

Measure H Road Maintenance Contracts

SPEAKER_00

Finally, we awarded two important contracts for road maintenance, both funded by Measure H. One is for a single and double fibrized slurry overlay, which will protect, protect, and preserve over eight miles of our residential and arterial roadways. The second project involves adjusting manhole and valve covers to ensure a smooth, safe driving surface after the new seal coating is applied. We will be sharing those specific project locations on the city's social media channel soon.

Final Recap Tease And Sign-Off

SPEAKER_00

That's it for part two. Thank you for watching and keep an eye out for our final recap coming your way shortly. Have a great week, Hamfred.
