00:00:01.060 --> 00:00:12.451
On this episode of the Hanford Insider, we'll have expanded coverage of this weekend's Century of Memories celebration marking the 100th anniversary of the dedication of the Hanford Civic Auditorium.
00:00:12.451 --> 00:00:17.931
Joining us are Brad Albert, randy Shaw, jack Schwartz and Michael Quinn.
00:00:17.931 --> 00:00:22.341
This is the Hanford Insider for Monday, june 2nd.
00:00:38.947 --> 00:00:48.051
This is the Hanford Insider, the podcast where we dive into what makes our community tick, from local stories and hidden gems to conversations with people shaping our neighborhood.
00:00:48.051 --> 00:00:50.811
We're here to celebrate, explore and connect.
00:00:50.811 --> 00:00:52.493
I'm your host, rob Bentley.
00:00:52.493 --> 00:01:03.496
Whether you're new to Hanford or a longtime local, this is your source for everything happening in our town, from events and news to conversations with people who make Hanford such a unique community.
00:01:03.496 --> 00:01:05.156
I hope you enjoy the format.
00:01:05.156 --> 00:01:07.977
Now let's take a look at this week's community news.
00:01:11.799 --> 00:01:17.430
The Hanford City Council held a special meeting last Thursday to discuss appointing an interim city manager and the process for hiring a permanent replacement.
00:01:17.430 --> 00:01:24.409
The council decided to search for an interim city manager from within the current city staff to maintain continuity.
00:01:24.409 --> 00:01:29.171
However, if an internal candidate cannot be hired, then they'll look outside.
00:01:29.171 --> 00:01:38.204
The council also decided to hire an outside recruiting firm for the process of hiring a permanent city manager, and a nationwide search will be conducted.
00:01:38.204 --> 00:01:49.414
One of the more interesting comments I heard was by Councilwoman Nancy Howes, who asked for everyone to be more cordial on social media and during public comment portions of city council meetings.
00:01:49.414 --> 00:01:56.305
Council members agreed and reminded those in attendance that the meetings are streamed for everyone to see on the internet.
00:01:56.305 --> 00:02:12.287
I totally agree because, let's face it, our next city manager probably already has their eyes and ears on Hanford and they'd likely prefer working for a city with a more positive outlook than what is shared on social media and from the regulars, who seem to have something to complain about.
00:02:12.287 --> 00:02:19.024
At every city council meeting the city will update everyone on the process as it plays out over the coming weeks and months.
00:02:22.687 --> 00:02:24.850
Now let's take a look at this week's community calendar.
00:02:24.850 --> 00:02:39.818
At this week's Thursday Night Marketplace it's the Civic Auditorium Centennial Celebration with the band Blackstone.
00:02:39.818 --> 00:02:44.669
The Kings Players production of Eat your Heart Out is now playing at the Temple Theater.
00:02:44.669 --> 00:02:53.360
For more information about the production, including times and tickets, visit kingsplayersorg.
00:02:53.360 --> 00:02:56.647
Part one of the History of Kings County Agriculture display at the Carnegie Museum of Kings County runs through the end of July.
00:02:56.647 --> 00:03:03.917
The museum is located at 109 East 8th Street and is open Fridays, saturdays and Sundays from 1 pm to 5 pm.
00:03:03.917 --> 00:03:08.251
Visit carnegiemuseumofkingscountyorg for more information.
00:03:10.901 --> 00:03:15.491
The Hanford Elk Spring Craft Boutique will be held on Sunday, june 8th, from 9 am to 3 pm.
00:03:15.491 --> 00:03:18.870
The lodge is located at 506 North Dowdy Street.
00:03:18.870 --> 00:03:28.753
The Hanford Juneteenth Celebration will be held on Saturday, june 14th at Coe Park from 11 am to 5 pm.
00:03:28.753 --> 00:03:34.610
If you have an event coming up and you'd like some help getting the word out, let's work together.
00:03:34.610 --> 00:03:37.889
Send your information to hanfordinsider at gmailcom.
00:03:37.889 --> 00:03:42.770
Be sure to subscribe to my weekly newsletter to get a complete calendar of events.
00:03:42.770 --> 00:03:45.729
It's the most comprehensive community calendar available.
00:03:59.121 --> 00:04:19.132
Well, as we know, coming up on Saturday, june 7th, we have the Century of Memories celebration, the 100th anniversary of the dedication of the Hanford Civic Auditorium, and we've got a lot of people on today's show to talk about the event, and we've had a committee that has been meeting for several months about this day and special celebration.
00:04:19.132 --> 00:04:22.468
Joining me right now is Brad Albert and Randy Shaw.
00:04:22.468 --> 00:04:23.370
Welcome to the show, guys.
00:04:23.370 --> 00:04:25.485
Thanks for having us, rob.
00:04:25.485 --> 00:04:27.826
So, brad, let's start with you.
00:04:27.826 --> 00:04:37.603
It's a full day of activities and, rather than give all the information out, I thought I'd give you an opportunity to invite people to the day of activities.
00:04:37.603 --> 00:04:39.029
Let's start from the very beginning.
00:04:39.800 --> 00:04:48.875
Yeah, so we have chosen Saturday, june 7th, as the day for the centennial birthday of the Civic Auditorium.
00:04:48.875 --> 00:04:58.714
The day will start at 7 am with the Hanford Breakfast Lions serving breakfast inside of the Civic Auditorium.
00:04:58.714 --> 00:05:02.870
Outside in the park, carnegie Car Show will be happening.
00:05:02.870 --> 00:05:05.980
So there'll be lots of activities in the park that day.
00:05:05.980 --> 00:05:08.810
It will be open to the public at that time.
00:05:08.810 --> 00:05:16.028
They'll be able to view our historical displays and have a nice hot breakfast to get the day started.
00:05:16.509 --> 00:05:34.774
Throughout the day we'll have, you know, the building will be open for folks to come in and look at the displays and then at 3 pm folks to come in and look at the displays and then at 3 pm, what we're generically calling the program will be the official celebration of the 100th birthday of the Civic Auditorium.
00:05:34.774 --> 00:05:48.160
That celebration will include a lot of different things, but we've got a very, very special performance going to be happening that I know Rob will be talking about here shortly.
00:05:48.160 --> 00:06:03.345
But this whole event is really about, you know, this iconic landmark of the city of Hanford and just all the things that have happened with inside those walls over a century In the planning meetings we talk about.
00:06:03.345 --> 00:06:12.502
You know, if the walls could talk, what would they say?
00:06:12.502 --> 00:06:13.584
So we'll be telling that story.
00:06:13.584 --> 00:06:17.632
We do have historical photos and we actually have a video that kind of captures, summarizes the history.
00:06:19.560 --> 00:06:44.384
So, as part of the celebration, we have proclamations from local politicians, we have participations from the Boy Scouts, we have the King's Fiddlersclamations from local politicians, we have participations from the Boy Scouts, we have the King's Fiddlers group that's going to perform, we have lots of different speakers, a lot of music, because that building has been the place for so many musicians and performers to perform everything from ballet to band concerts to barbershop groups, and we're really looking forward to it.
00:06:44.384 --> 00:06:50.488
And as part of that, I have together what I am calling the John Philip Sousa Tribute Band.
00:06:50.488 --> 00:07:06.422
When I interviewed Brad on the show about two years ago at the Winter Wonderland, we had a conversation about the upcoming anniversary and I said you know, brad, one of the things I've always wanted to do is put together a John Philip Sousa Tribute Band and we could perform at the Centennial Celebration.
00:07:06.422 --> 00:07:08.367
And here we are, just a couple of years later.
00:07:08.367 --> 00:07:18.146
And for those of you who don't know, the reason why the John Philip Sousa Celebration is so important in Hanford is that his band actually performed in Hanford four times.
00:07:18.146 --> 00:07:32.329
They performed twice at the old opera house and then, when the Civic Auditorium opened, they performed in January of 1926 and on Halloween, on October 31st 1928.
00:07:32.771 --> 00:07:36.744
And John Philip Sousa actually had some really great things to say about the building.
00:07:36.744 --> 00:07:44.127
You know, when the building was built people were like you're going to build a building that big for the size of Hanford?
00:07:44.127 --> 00:07:54.413
Only had 7,000 people that lived in Hanford at the time and the city officials big surprise got a little scrutiny for building such a big building.
00:07:54.413 --> 00:07:59.415
But here we are, 100 years later, and just the investment that that has been for us.
00:07:59.415 --> 00:08:00.699
It's been fantastic.
00:08:00.699 --> 00:08:13.627
So the Sousa Band will actually be performing four or five of the best songs and at the end we have a special celebration of Stars and Stripes, forever March, and then we'll sing Happy Birthday and we get some free cakes.
00:08:13.627 --> 00:08:16.261
So, brad, tell us about this cake that the committee's been working on.
00:08:16.261 --> 00:08:17.141
I can't wait to see it.
00:08:17.802 --> 00:08:19.103
Yeah, me neither.
00:08:19.103 --> 00:08:50.019
We're working with a local bakery to design and to make and bake a birthday cake that symbolizes the Civic, so it will actually physically look like a miniature Civic Auditorium with the columns and all of that, and once we sing happy birthday, everybody will be able to get a piece of the cake and celebrate together.
00:08:50.019 --> 00:08:56.227
This event is completely free for everyone, so we invite everybody to come out.
00:08:56.227 --> 00:09:01.971
We'll have tables and chairs set up, so it will be a very nice afternoon.
00:09:03.941 --> 00:09:26.221
I'm really looking forward to the historical displays, because the city has partnered with the Carnegie Museum of Kings County to acquire some great images of the building during the different eras and also a lot of artifacts, including the ones that were put in the cornerstone 100 years ago, and Randy joins us now to give us some information about the historic items that will be on display.
00:09:27.202 --> 00:09:31.591
Yeah, we have many varied things, a lot of things from the cornerstone.
00:09:31.591 --> 00:09:41.623
That was a fascinating thing in itself to get to open that and be happy to get to share that with everyone that visits for the celebration.
00:09:41.623 --> 00:09:49.505
We have a few objects that were original from the auditorium when it opened and one of them is the spotlight.
00:09:49.505 --> 00:09:58.347
It was made from a company that was famous for arcing spotlights that used a carbon arc.
00:09:58.347 --> 00:10:03.541
This one is actually an incandescent, but it was a very famous brand.
00:10:03.541 --> 00:10:08.544
So, reading the interesting history about it, you'll get to read some of that and see it.
00:10:08.544 --> 00:10:18.071
In the lobby we also have the original dimmer panel, which doesn't sound like much to the average person, but if you see it, you can see understand.
00:10:18.071 --> 00:10:33.322
If you've heard of the steampunk, it kind of gives you that feel it's a big, massive thing, that's electrical, but it's kind of prehistoric, as you might say, and we have that on display there as well, with some information about it and what it did.
00:10:33.322 --> 00:10:37.380
It controlled all the lights on the stage and it was the original one from 19,.
00:10:37.380 --> 00:10:39.884
When they put it, 1924, 25.
00:10:40.446 --> 00:10:43.390
We also have the original set of chairs.
00:10:43.390 --> 00:10:51.812
These were in different groupings, some were individual, some were in pairs, some were up to four in a cluster.
00:10:51.812 --> 00:10:53.745
These are pairs of two.
00:10:53.745 --> 00:11:04.812
We have three sets of two left from the original chairs that were in Civic and what I do is I like to include a picture from something in the past where that object was being used.
00:11:04.812 --> 00:11:09.874
So we have pictures showing that that chair was being used for an event.
00:11:09.874 --> 00:11:19.240
I think a church was celebrating their 75th Pentecostal or something and having a dinner there in the Civic and several items like that.
00:11:19.280 --> 00:11:21.504
We have historical items from the police department.
00:11:21.504 --> 00:11:37.009
The police department, as many people might remember that are longtime Hanfordites, was in the basement of the Civic Auditorium from like the 50s until the 70s and they moved into their current location in 76.
00:11:37.009 --> 00:11:44.208
So there's a few items that you can see some old badges, their batons.
00:11:44.208 --> 00:11:53.770
We're going to have the original, their first uniforms from 1910 somewhere around there and we'll have those on display as well.
00:11:53.770 --> 00:12:00.548
Mark Dillon and Hutch Hutchison those two were the familiar guys in the 80s that you saw.
00:12:00.548 --> 00:12:04.307
We called them the bobbies, but they were wearing the original uniform.
00:12:04.307 --> 00:12:08.427
So it was a community outreach for the police department in the 80s.
00:12:08.528 --> 00:12:09.910
I think that was a great thing.
00:12:09.910 --> 00:12:11.023
I think it worked really well.
00:12:11.023 --> 00:12:23.163
So that's fun to see that we have objects that we've gotten from the fire department and you'll see a few of those and also some pictures showing where things were and then what the object is.
00:12:23.163 --> 00:12:28.527
We have, like an old dentist barber's chair, and you know that represents the time.
00:12:28.527 --> 00:12:36.688
You know there's always so many things we have that are directly related to the civics, so we have a lot of things also that are within that time frame.
00:12:36.688 --> 00:12:39.245
That gives you a feel of what Hanford was like.
00:12:39.245 --> 00:12:47.341
So we have a lot of pictures from the past, a lot of pictures from the past.
00:12:47.341 --> 00:12:51.909
One exciting one that I haven't seen all the way through yet is a movie of downtown life in the 1930s.
00:12:51.909 --> 00:12:54.554
So that's a very cool one, donated from the Fox Theater.
00:12:54.554 --> 00:12:56.464
So we'll get to see that as well.
00:12:57.245 --> 00:13:05.631
We have video we'll be showing of us opening both the Civic Auditorium's Cornerstone and the Veterans Memorial cornerstone.
00:13:05.631 --> 00:13:12.413
I suggested that they allow us to open that one, since it was actually concurrent.
00:13:12.413 --> 00:13:28.628
While the Civic was still being completed, they had started the Veterans Building and they're kind of intertwined because the veterans, the county purchased the land from the city of $12,000 to be able to build the veterans building on that site.
00:13:28.628 --> 00:13:31.296
So they kind of were hand in hand.
00:13:31.296 --> 00:13:37.341
So the veterans groups agreed and we open them up and there's some wonderful things in there that people will get to see.
00:13:37.341 --> 00:13:40.192
So we'll have a display case with those objects.
00:13:40.192 --> 00:13:43.966
We'll have another display case with all the civic time capsule objects.
00:13:44.629 --> 00:13:45.311
Let let's see what else.
00:13:45.311 --> 00:13:46.745
We have the original pulleys.
00:13:46.745 --> 00:13:48.265
That's Frederick's of Hollywood.
00:13:48.265 --> 00:14:05.274
Now many people think of the fancy clothing and such from there, but it actually started out as a fabric curtain company and you'll see the original pulleys that are no longer used, from when they used to raise vertically.
00:14:05.274 --> 00:14:18.712
You've seen the cartoons where the guy cuts the rope and drops the sand sack on somebody, right, that's the kind that it used to have and that was replaced sometime in the 90s, I think, or 80s.
00:14:18.712 --> 00:14:22.169
So we have that on display.
00:14:22.169 --> 00:14:32.567
We have the chairs that were in the chamber or the council chambers and we did a remodel in 2010 that I was personally involved with and we saved those old chairs.
00:14:32.567 --> 00:14:34.789
So we have a before and after showing that.
00:14:34.789 --> 00:14:40.234
So it kind of just shows the progress of time of some changes and what we've done in the building.
00:14:41.895 --> 00:14:47.001
It's definitely a reason to come downtown on Saturday, june 7th, for sure.
00:14:47.001 --> 00:14:54.990
There's so much that's going to be on display, from historical artifacts to pancakes in the morning, to cake in the afternoon.
00:14:54.990 --> 00:14:58.153
It's really going to be a great day.
00:15:06.774 --> 00:15:14.104
I remember going to those pancake breakfasts when they had the parades and that was always just a neat, neat time, the atmosphere having that, getting up early in the morning, getting out there.
00:15:14.104 --> 00:15:16.827
The Lions always did a great job.
00:15:16.827 --> 00:15:19.049
It was just kind of extra special being in the Civic.
00:15:23.375 --> 00:15:28.988
You know, randy, I'm going to put you on the spot here for just a second because you work closely with the buildings in Hanford and we appreciate the work that you do keeping things up.
00:15:28.988 --> 00:15:34.567
Is there a secret story about the Civic Auditorium that maybe we don't know?
00:15:34.567 --> 00:15:40.768
Something that you have come across in your work that just like blew your mind?
00:15:40.768 --> 00:15:45.647
I know you're involved with a clock for one, but is there something that just amazed you?
00:15:47.402 --> 00:15:50.355
I know you're involved with a clock for one, but is there something that just amazed you?
00:15:50.355 --> 00:16:11.434
No-transcript.
00:16:11.434 --> 00:16:14.542
Yes, they did have.
00:16:14.542 --> 00:16:20.101
She was on a tour throughout California, but she and I thought originally that she arrived on the train.
00:16:20.101 --> 00:16:24.024
It would make sense, right A lot of politicians, and such did she did not.
00:16:24.024 --> 00:16:29.318
Right A lot of politicians, and such did she, did not.
00:16:29.318 --> 00:16:37.945
She, with her entourage, drove here from the LA area and she made notes of it in her personal diary about it, which you'll see in some quotes that I included under her picture.
00:16:38.506 --> 00:16:50.049
That's going to be a fascinating portion also is just to see some of the more famous people that have performed or spoken in the Civic, to see some of the more famous people that have performed or spoken in the civic, and we have a whole section of displays, pictures and descriptions for that.
00:16:50.049 --> 00:17:05.862
But the fact that she was here, she was talking about human rights, but she also talked a little bit about the likelihood of us joining in World War II, and so that was a highly significant appearance that she made.
00:17:05.862 --> 00:17:11.130
But you look at the list of hit parade people that performed there.
00:17:11.130 --> 00:17:12.922
It is really amazing.
00:17:12.922 --> 00:17:20.243
They don't mean much to kids these days, but if you read a little bit about their background, how popular they were.
00:17:20.765 --> 00:17:23.529
It was like having an American bandstand in Hanford.
00:17:23.529 --> 00:17:24.720
It really was.
00:17:24.720 --> 00:17:36.917
And the only reason is because of this fantastic venue Having the Civic Auditorium in 1925, when, you know, big band, swing, jazz was really picking up.
00:17:36.917 --> 00:17:42.634
So all those genres were growing and it was the dances were crazy.
00:17:42.634 --> 00:18:01.365
They would have these dances and have these famous orchestras of musicians come and play Tommy Dorsey, you know, Benny Goodman big names for them and nationally known, worldwide renowned, and they would have a sold-out, packed house.
00:18:01.365 --> 00:18:05.226
So when they had a dance, they had a dance in the Civic.
00:18:08.394 --> 00:18:08.756
Yeah for sure.
00:18:08.756 --> 00:18:26.368
One of the things that I had discovered in my research is that one of the reasons that we were able to attract some of these large big bands the jazz era was because of the location being so close to the army base in Lemoore, and so that was pretty fantastic, and on Sousa's tours he would tour around the best venues.
00:18:26.368 --> 00:18:36.288
He didn't just play anywhere, and when this building was built he had people that had probably come out and scouted it out and said it would be a great place.
00:18:36.288 --> 00:18:40.838
And it certainly turned out to be that way, and that's what we're celebrating on June 7th.
00:18:40.838 --> 00:18:48.851
So, Brad, can you give us a real quick rundown of the events, just a real quick synopsis, and we'll wrap this up and send it over to the car show side of things.
00:18:49.654 --> 00:18:56.909
Yeah, so for June 7th in the morning, like I mentioned, 7 am, the breakfast will be served from 7 to 11 am.
00:18:56.909 --> 00:19:05.385
The building will remain open for people to come in to see all the wonderful historic displays that Randy just shared with us.
00:19:05.385 --> 00:19:08.411
At 3 pm our program starts.
00:19:08.411 --> 00:19:20.788
We'll probably last probably a little bit over an hour and 15 minutes roughly, and then we will cut the cake, sing happy birthday and have an opportunity.
00:19:20.788 --> 00:19:32.942
You know, this building belongs to the community, so we're very, very happy that our June 7th event is really about that and we invite all to join us.
00:19:34.385 --> 00:19:38.585
I want to say one other thing, Rob, is that you're kind of not promoting yourself here.
00:19:38.585 --> 00:19:44.119
And tell us how many members you're going to have playing in the John Philip Sousa band.
00:19:45.803 --> 00:19:53.265
There currently are about 80 members in the band and, yes, we fit on the stage and I always get asked that question could 80 fit on the stage?
00:19:53.265 --> 00:19:55.442
And I said, well, sousa, put 100 up there.
00:19:55.442 --> 00:19:57.701
So I think we can probably do it.
00:19:58.503 --> 00:19:59.145
Imagine that.
00:19:59.145 --> 00:20:03.906
Can you imagine hearing that back then with a 100-piece band?
00:20:04.494 --> 00:20:13.788
Yeah, they actually closed all the stores and schools in town so people that could attend and they made the tickets were cheap Not even a dollar, I don't think.
00:20:13.788 --> 00:20:16.913
But yeah, they literally shut down the town.
00:20:16.913 --> 00:20:21.564
It was such an impressive thing to have him visit, for sure.
00:20:22.746 --> 00:20:30.220
I read that he was celebrating his 50th anniversary as a conductor at one of those concerts that he had in the Civic.
00:20:31.346 --> 00:20:38.097
Yeah, he definitely was celebrating his 50th anniversary as a conductor on that final performance and he passed away several years later.
00:20:38.097 --> 00:20:39.339
But what a legacy.
00:20:39.339 --> 00:20:48.988
I know that my Portuguese friends have all been excited because we're celebrating someone of Portuguese heritage in that recent museum.
00:20:48.988 --> 00:20:52.734
I've got a lot of new friends, so that's pretty fun too.
00:20:53.516 --> 00:21:02.835
Well one thing I will say is you know, because of this celebration and requiring me to do a little more research on these different things, it's been interesting.
00:21:02.835 --> 00:21:10.534
Like John Phillips says, I didn't know much about him and so I have even more respect for you know what he did and that he was here.
00:21:10.534 --> 00:21:16.128
People like Eleanor Roosevelt, these, uh, these early musicians it was.
00:21:16.128 --> 00:21:30.800
It was quite interesting and I think I hope the public comes out in mass to learn a little bit more about um, their, their beautiful building and the past that Hanford cherishes and is known for keeping the history in Hanford.
00:21:32.046 --> 00:21:34.114
Yeah, I know there's going to be a lot of pictures taken.
00:21:34.114 --> 00:21:39.376
I know there's going to be a lot of videotape of this event and we'll try to archive that the best that we can.
00:21:39.376 --> 00:21:47.491
We'll actually be live streaming the event on our YouTube channel, which is at Hanford Insider, and you can watch the ceremony live.
00:21:47.491 --> 00:21:48.967
It should be a great performance.
00:21:48.967 --> 00:21:59.125
I've got some equipment to make it extra special and we're looking forward to the people that come and then, if you aren't able to join us, you can watch online a little bit later.
00:21:59.165 --> 00:22:07.516
But it certainly is going to be a fantastic day and I think one of the things that the committee is most proud of is that this event is absolutely free.
00:22:07.516 --> 00:22:09.269
The car show is free.
00:22:09.269 --> 00:22:15.614
The pancakes aren't in the morning Got to pay for those pancakes, but the event at 3 is going to be free.
00:22:15.614 --> 00:22:24.574
The exhibition is going to be free to come in and look at and we're just so excited for this moment in Hanford's history because, honestly, we haven't had a big event.
00:22:24.574 --> 00:22:39.613
You know we've had the celebration of Hanford's birthday with some cake at Thursday Night Marketplace, but I can't recall in my time in Hanford having a celebration this big, aside from the city centennial in 1990 and 91 that I was a part of with that committee.
00:22:39.613 --> 00:22:45.753
So this is going to be great and I'd like to thank you guys for joining us and we look forward to seeing everyone on June 7th.
00:22:58.902 --> 00:22:59.703
Thank you, rob.
00:22:59.703 --> 00:23:00.084
Thank you.
00:23:00.084 --> 00:23:09.134
Saturday is also the date of the fourth annual Carnegie Museum of Kings County Car Show and we have with us Jack Schwartz who is the president, and we have Michael Quinn who is the car show coordinator.
00:23:09.134 --> 00:23:10.897
And welcome to the show, guys.
00:23:10.897 --> 00:23:12.380
Hi, thank you, good to be here.
00:23:12.380 --> 00:23:20.027
So, jack, tell us the car show is bigger and better than ever and we've got a lot to look forward to on Saturday.
00:23:20.027 --> 00:23:24.094
Can you tell us a little bit about what people that come to downtown Hanford can expect?
00:23:24.473 --> 00:23:33.396
Sure, we're expecting about 200 cars, maybe more, and they range from 1930s to modern.
00:23:33.396 --> 00:23:35.271
I'll let Michael talk more about that.
00:23:35.271 --> 00:23:55.941
But one neat thing is we always park our best-in-show cars from the previous years, and so those will be parked in front of the museum, and in addition, we'll have probably 10 or 12 food vendors everything from Mexican and American and hot dogs and Filipino.
00:23:55.941 --> 00:24:06.179
We always try and get a good cross section and we should have about 30 vendors selling their crafts and their goods in the park as well.
00:24:06.765 --> 00:24:08.230
So let's talk about the layout of it.
00:24:08.230 --> 00:24:12.076
It does take up a significant portion of the central section of downtown.
00:24:12.076 --> 00:24:16.036
Where are the streets that the cars are going to be shown?
00:24:16.244 --> 00:24:39.772
Right Dowdy Street from Warmerdam Alley by the library all the way down to 8th Street alley, by the library all the way down to 8th Street, 9th Street, from Dowdy to Harris and 8th Street in front of the museum which is Harris to Dowdy and then also in front of the courthouse all the way almost to Irwin Street.
00:24:39.772 --> 00:24:50.227
So there's great picture opportunities for people to look at cars and have pictures with the courthouse and Civic Auditorium and all our historic buildings.
00:24:50.227 --> 00:24:50.989
Yeah for sure.
00:24:51.490 --> 00:24:54.036
So the cars start rolling in at what time?
00:24:54.036 --> 00:24:56.269
And then what time does the show officially open?
00:24:56.269 --> 00:24:58.194
And then I know you have an awards ceremony as well.
00:24:58.214 --> 00:25:05.354
Right, yeah, we'll be staging the cars and having them come in around 7.30 to 8.
00:25:05.354 --> 00:25:24.707
Everything should be in place by 9 o'clock, including all of our food vendors and other vendors, and the show goes from around 9 am until about 1, 1.30 when they will be judging, and we should be done by 2 o'clock and, of course, the Civic Auditorium celebration starts at 3.
00:25:24.707 --> 00:25:26.592
So it can be a full day all the way around.
00:25:26.791 --> 00:25:28.837
Yeah, it's definitely going to be a great celebration.
00:25:28.837 --> 00:25:38.037
One of the amazing features of this show is we have car enthusiast Michael Quinn, who spends a lot of time looking at these vehicles going to different shows throughout the valley.
00:25:38.037 --> 00:25:41.875
And Mike, what makes this show in downtown Hanford so unique?
00:25:42.505 --> 00:25:45.667
One of the things that really makes this unique is that we have a People's Choice Award.
00:25:45.667 --> 00:25:48.691
One of the things that really makes us unique is that we have a People's Choice Award, which we find a lot of.
00:25:48.691 --> 00:25:55.997
The car owners really appreciate that, because they try to communicate a lot with the folks that come to see the cars.
00:25:55.997 --> 00:26:08.411
They like to tell them about their cars, they like to tell them what they've done with them and how much time and effort they've put into them, and when they persuade somebody that their car is important, it means a lot to them.
00:26:08.411 --> 00:26:11.701
And then when the community as a whole says that's our best, it means a lot.
00:26:12.484 --> 00:26:16.536
So what are some of the categories and kind of vehicles we can expect to see?
00:26:16.765 --> 00:26:24.839
Well, we have 11 separate categories, plus we have a top 10, which allows for honorable mentions beyond those that went in their specific categories.
00:26:24.839 --> 00:26:30.373
So what we've got is, as mentioned, the People's Choice, and then we'll have the Best in Show.
00:26:30.373 --> 00:26:35.152
We'll have a Hot Rod, we'll have Historic Cars, which are those prior to 1950.
00:26:35.152 --> 00:26:39.127
We have Vintage Cars, which we consider those from 1951 to 75.
00:26:39.127 --> 00:26:43.557
Then we also have Modern Cars, which are 76 to the present.
00:26:43.557 --> 00:26:53.496
We'll also include Imported European and Imp imported Japanese, which are kind of neat because we're trying to recruit younger people coming into the car shows.
00:26:53.496 --> 00:27:05.708
Then, of course, muscle cars and sports cars, which have long been a staple of car shows, and then we're also including an area for trucks, also because trucks are a big and growing segment of the collectible car market.
00:27:06.789 --> 00:27:08.894
One of the things that I've noticed going to car shows.
00:27:08.894 --> 00:27:11.118
I'm not a car show enthusiast.
00:27:11.118 --> 00:27:14.333
I mean I love going but I wouldn't consider myself an enthusiast.
00:27:14.333 --> 00:27:30.932
But once we started this show in Hanford, I started witnessing a whole culture that I was completely unaware of just how friendly the people are to talk about their cars Maybe for someone who hasn't been to a car show before and they want to see what this is all about.
00:27:30.932 --> 00:27:34.529
What would you say to encourage them to come down and kind of witness this?
00:27:34.790 --> 00:27:40.053
Well, first off, a lot of people don't realize they're car fans until they see some cars that are really unique and special.
00:27:40.053 --> 00:27:44.330
And then they go oh my God, my dad had a car like that, my uncle had a car like that.
00:27:44.330 --> 00:27:46.736
I loved driving in that car when I was a kid.
00:27:46.736 --> 00:27:48.259
They've forgotten that part.
00:27:48.259 --> 00:27:51.727
The other part is I've always thought that car was the coolest thing I ever saw.
00:27:51.727 --> 00:27:53.090
But I never see them anymore.
00:27:53.090 --> 00:27:55.596
And here it is today, or here's two of them.
00:27:55.964 --> 00:28:03.690
But the other thing that's really sharp is that many of the people who own these cars put a lot of time and effort into them, but it's not just for themselves.
00:28:03.690 --> 00:28:15.731
They really like to talk to the public about their cars, tell them what they've done with them, how they've worked on it, who's put the paint on them, who's done the mechanic work if they've done it.
