Step inside Hanford’s old National Guard Armory and you’ll hear it: jump ropes snapping, gloves popping, bikes rolling, and kids trading high-fives with officers who spot them between rounds. We sat down with Police Chief Stephanie Huddleston and Coach Ruben Valdovinos to unpack how the Hanford Police Activities League turns sport into trust, structure, and real opportunity for local youth.

We explore the full slate of PAL programs—boxing from age eight through high school, a thriving junior explorer pipeline that feeds into police explorers, and a newly launched mountain biking team built from a dozen fully funded bikes. Coach Ruben shares how the boxing team finished with the highest win percentage in the nation, what it takes to compete at week-long national tournaments, and why the upcoming Central California Junior Olympics in Bakersfield could send Hanford athletes to West Virginia. Along the way, we get practical: training schedules, age groups, how first-timers get started, and how parents can walk into the gym between 4 and 8 p.m. to meet the coaches and feel the environment.

Chief Huddleston explains the heart of PAL: daily mentorship between officers and youth in a space where kids actually want to be. Those relationships have already led nine former participants into law enforcement careers, with others serving in corrections and the fire service. We also dig into the nonprofit funding model—why PAL relies on donations, grants, and local sponsors like BadasciTires and Carnicería De Valle—and how community showcase events at Sierra Pacific High keep the lights on and the team traveling. Plus, we round up community news, highlight education honorees across local districts, and deliver a detailed sports segment covering Sierra Pacific basketball and soccer playoff pushes.

If you care about youth sports, public safety, or simple, positive places for kids to belong, this story will lift you. Well, today we have the wonderful opportunity to visit with the Hanford Police Activities League.

00:05:07.759 --> 00:05:12.639
And we have Coach Ruben Valdavinos and we have Hanford Chief of Police Stephanie Huddleston.

00:05:12.720 --> 00:05:13.439
Welcome to the show.

00:05:14.240 --> 00:05:14.879
Thank you.

00:05:15.279 --> 00:05:19.839
Stephanie, you've been a very big advocate for the Police Activities League over the years.

00:05:19.920 --> 00:05:26.399
And I know we visited previously, and you were talking about some of the great things that the program does for kids in Hanford.

00:05:26.720 --> 00:05:33.839
And uh can you give us a kind of an update as to what's been going on with the Police Activities League and how it's grown over the last several years?

00:05:34.160 --> 00:05:34.399
Yes.

00:05:34.480 --> 00:05:37.199
So the program was started in 2016.

00:05:37.759 --> 00:05:41.279
Um we have our PAL boxing program.

00:05:41.439 --> 00:05:45.680
Um we have our junior explorer program, which is fifth through eighth graders.

00:05:45.759 --> 00:05:49.600
Uh, there's a total of 125 kids enrolled in that program right now.

00:05:49.839 --> 00:05:52.399
Um, and that leads them into explorers.

00:05:52.560 --> 00:05:54.800
Police explorers, we currently have 11.

00:05:54.879 --> 00:05:59.600
Um, and we're getting ready to start the season for our Palm mountain biking program.

00:06:00.560 --> 00:06:05.360
Yeah, you had mentioned that mountain biking program, and it's it's off to a great start, yeah.

00:06:05.600 --> 00:06:07.360
Yeah, it's been a little bit slow start.

00:06:07.439 --> 00:06:11.920
Uh, we had to raise the money for all of the bicycles and equipment that was needed.

00:06:12.000 --> 00:06:20.480
Uh, we do have 12 fully functional bicycles, and we have some uh students enrolled now, and so they're getting ready to kick off that season.

00:06:21.199 --> 00:06:27.920
Coach, uh, we know that the the boxing team has gotten a lot of recognition lately, and we're just gonna jump right to it.

00:06:28.000 --> 00:06:30.399
Uh, this is your chance to brag on the kids.

00:06:30.720 --> 00:06:32.800
Well, yeah, we uh we had a good year last year.

00:06:33.040 --> 00:06:36.720
Um we finished with the highest winning percentage in the nation.

00:06:37.040 --> 00:06:52.079
I think there's over 20,000 gyms out there nationwide, and for us to finish number one was surprising, but not surprising at the same time because the talent we have, and uh we're very fortunate to go to many tournaments and events.

00:06:52.720 --> 00:06:55.360
So tell us about these tournaments that you travel to.

00:06:55.439 --> 00:06:58.079
Um, where where have the kids gone for these tournaments?

00:06:58.399 --> 00:07:02.160
A lot of them are locally, um everywhere, everywhere in the Central Valley.

00:07:02.319 --> 00:07:06.639
Sometimes uh be in Southern California, Northern California, the national tournaments.

00:07:06.720 --> 00:07:11.360
Uh we went to Las Vegas, uh Kansas, West Virginia.

00:07:11.600 --> 00:07:14.160
There's some in uh Texas that just happened.

00:07:14.240 --> 00:07:24.480
We didn't go to this one because uh I gave the kids some time off, but they're nationwide, they're huge tournaments, they're week-long tournaments where the kids are constantly making weight.

00:07:24.560 --> 00:07:26.959
It's a it's a tough sport to be in.

00:07:27.199 --> 00:07:30.560
Yeah, we'll get back to the fundraising efforts here in just a minute.

00:07:30.800 --> 00:07:33.920
Uh, what types of programs do you offer at the PAL?

00:07:34.079 --> 00:07:41.040
Uh, for those of you who don't know, it's located in the old Hanford National Guard Armory at the corner of 11th and Florinda, across from Woodrow Wilson School.

00:07:41.199 --> 00:07:48.399
As a matter of fact, uh late afternoons, early evenings, you can see the the kids running running down 11th Avenue running laps around Woodrow Wilson.

00:07:48.639 --> 00:07:51.920
What kind of programs do you offer here and what age groups?

00:07:52.639 --> 00:07:54.720
We start our boxers uh eight.

00:07:54.800 --> 00:07:57.120
Uh that's when they can sign up with USA boxing.

00:07:57.279 --> 00:08:04.959
So my first group is from 430 to 5.30, which is uh eight-year-olds to usually 11, 12, depending how experienced they are.

00:08:05.279 --> 00:08:08.800
And then we move on to our second group, which is usually 13 to 18.

00:08:09.199 --> 00:08:15.120
Long as they're still in high school, college, uh, we allow them to come in uh from there.

00:08:15.680 --> 00:08:22.000
It's a two-hour from 5.30 to almost eight o'clock at night, but it's two groups.

00:08:22.720 --> 00:08:26.319
So let's talk about the impact of this program on kids.

00:08:26.399 --> 00:08:28.160
Uh that cannot be overlooked.

00:08:28.240 --> 00:08:32.320
Um, it has made such a tremendous impact in the community and the youth.

00:08:32.559 --> 00:08:35.519
People always talk about, oh, there's nothing to do in town.

00:08:35.600 --> 00:08:37.200
And I beg to differ.

00:08:37.360 --> 00:08:40.879
I walked in earlier this evening and saw a gym full of kids just having fun.

00:08:41.039 --> 00:08:44.720
So um tell us about the impact that it has on the children of Hanford.

00:08:45.519 --> 00:08:47.679
I think it's uh huge impact.

00:08:48.159 --> 00:08:55.679
One of the main reasons I joined Powell was to get the community, our youth, uh interacting with the police department.

00:08:55.759 --> 00:09:00.240
Uh that was the biggest my biggest goal was to get them interacting.

00:09:00.639 --> 00:09:09.039
Um we have actually made, I think, nine officers in the last ten years that were teenagers now police officers.

00:09:09.360 --> 00:09:10.080
That's fantastic.

00:09:10.399 --> 00:09:12.879
So I that's that's was huge.

00:09:13.120 --> 00:09:16.000
Um we have a few officers in Northern California.

00:09:16.240 --> 00:09:24.159
Well, I think we have one in Southern California, we have a few scattered around central, and we have some are actually correction officers, uh, one's a fire to fire.

00:09:24.320 --> 00:09:25.440
Those are great stories.

00:09:25.600 --> 00:09:40.159
So and Stephanie, I know the city is extremely proud to uh been recognized at city council meetings and such, but uh looking at the larger picture of someone who's responsible for public safety in the city, what have you seen the impact?

00:09:40.240 --> 00:09:43.759
Uh, where have you seen the impact in the community uh with this program?

00:09:44.159 --> 00:09:58.639
I see the impact being um one, the opportunity for our officers to interact with and mentor um kids in an environment where the kids want to be, um, seeing them not in an official capacity.

00:09:58.799 --> 00:10:03.840
Um, one of the things that we do here at the gym is this is where our officers work out.

00:10:04.000 --> 00:10:10.799
And so on their off time, they come in and work out at the gym, they can interact with the kids and see them as, you know, the human behind the badge.

00:10:10.879 --> 00:10:17.440
Um, have that opportunity to get to know us and um have those positive interactions and that mentoring.

00:10:18.080 --> 00:10:26.159
So Ruben talked about these tournaments that they travel to, and I'm sure there's equipment needs, there's facility needs.

00:10:26.399 --> 00:10:28.799
How can the city support this program?

00:10:28.879 --> 00:10:35.440
And how, you know, not only from a city perspective, but a citizen aspect, how can people support this program?

00:10:35.840 --> 00:10:38.559
So the Police Activities League is a nonprofit.

00:10:38.639 --> 00:10:41.759
Um, so it's it's not paid for by the city of Hanford.

00:10:42.080 --> 00:10:45.519
It's strictly through donations, uh fundraising.

00:10:45.679 --> 00:10:52.240
Uh Ruben does an incredible job of holding tournaments several times a year to bring in funds.

00:10:52.320 --> 00:10:53.519
We charge for admission.

00:10:53.759 --> 00:11:04.799
They come in, they get to see a great boxing show, um, but also those funds help support the program and make sure that the kids keep getting to turn to the tournaments they want to go to, need to go to, and that they get the equipment they need.

00:11:05.120 --> 00:11:17.600
He also does a lot of um donate, he gets a lot of donations um, as well as the the police department, other businesses in the city donate, but it's it's strictly through donations and fundraising and grants.

00:11:18.320 --> 00:11:20.399
And the city has responded.

00:11:20.480 --> 00:11:23.279
Um, I've seen the support that's come through through the program.

00:11:23.519 --> 00:11:32.799
And I think things like the recognition that you recently received really plays a big part in people's awareness of the program and how it impacts students.

00:11:33.120 --> 00:11:45.200
So, uh, coach, when students and parents particular have questions about the police activities leak and how they can get involved, how can they find out more about the program?

00:11:45.360 --> 00:11:49.360
And I know you mentioned uh that they can come on in to the gym at any time.

00:11:49.519 --> 00:11:51.120
Can you talk a little bit about that?

00:11:51.600 --> 00:11:56.000
Yeah, I prefer people to come to the gym and kind of bring their child with them.

00:11:56.080 --> 00:12:03.200
That way they can get a feeling of the the environment they're gonna want or eventually start training in.

00:12:03.360 --> 00:12:14.080
Uh that is the best way I prefer, but also the kids reach out to their SROs at the schools and they usually will call me, ask me if there's room like that, uh, if there's room in the gym.

00:12:14.399 --> 00:12:15.279
That's another great way.

00:12:15.440 --> 00:12:22.559
Reach out to your SROs, or you can head to the Haver Police or the police department as well, and and they'll guide you my way as well.

00:12:22.799 --> 00:12:25.519
But yeah, I'm usually here from 4 to 8 p.m.

00:12:25.840 --> 00:12:30.480
uh Monday through Friday, and uh doors are open, just come walking in.

00:12:31.200 --> 00:12:32.720
How many kids are we talking about here?

00:12:32.799 --> 00:12:37.120
I say kids a lot, but you did say eight through uh maybe younger college age.

00:12:37.279 --> 00:12:40.480
Uh, how many how many kids are we reaching here?

00:12:41.200 --> 00:12:48.320
Uh last year I believe we had a total of close to 70 registered USA boxing members.

00:12:48.639 --> 00:12:52.399
And that's been about an average for the last four or five years.

00:12:52.799 --> 00:13:00.480
Usually uh before that it was an average around 40, so it's grown almost double the size within the last four to five years.

00:13:00.720 --> 00:13:11.679
I wish I could take more on, but that is uh usually it's basically 30 or 40 over capacity for me as a trainer, but I try to get as many in as I can just to help out.

00:13:11.840 --> 00:13:12.480
But yeah.

00:13:13.200 --> 00:13:16.720
You gotta have some big tournaments coming up that you're really preparing for.

00:13:16.799 --> 00:13:17.919
Uh tell us about those.

00:13:18.639 --> 00:13:22.080
Yeah, we have our Central California um Junior Olympics.

00:13:22.159 --> 00:13:24.000
It will be in Bakersfield this year again.

00:13:24.320 --> 00:13:39.440
It's an advancy tournament, so those kids once uh if they win that tournament, they will be heading to West Virginia, and that is also like a seven-day tournament, and those are nationally ranked tournaments where they get points to become nationally ranked boxers.

00:13:39.679 --> 00:13:43.440
Uh this year I think we finished with four ranked boxers nationally.

00:13:44.000 --> 00:13:52.480
One was ranked number one for several months, and the other two, three were ranked uh in the top four.

00:13:52.879 --> 00:13:56.799
So the goal is to say keep them busy, keep putting these tournaments.

00:13:57.279 --> 00:14:00.559
We gotta raise the money to get there, and that's the goal.

00:14:01.120 --> 00:14:04.159
And you have some good business uh supporters as well, yeah.

00:14:04.879 --> 00:14:18.879
Yeah, John Badashi from Badashi Tires and Salvador from uh Carnersia de Valley, they've been one of our top donors for the last five, four to five years, and they sponsor usually our awards that go to all the shows.

00:14:19.279 --> 00:14:24.480
Usually it's 25 awards for each each event, so total fifty.

00:14:24.879 --> 00:14:27.840
And uh I really appreciate their support for the youth.

00:14:28.399 --> 00:14:30.399
So you have some stuff coming up in March as well.

00:14:31.120 --> 00:14:31.600
Correct.

00:14:31.679 --> 00:14:36.639
We have our uh two-day event, which will be at the Sierra Pacific High School.

00:14:36.799 --> 00:14:41.519
Uh the show will start at twelve o'clock Saturday and eleven o'clock Sunday.

00:14:41.840 --> 00:14:43.840
Uh$25 to get in.

00:14:43.919 --> 00:14:46.879
You'll watch four hours of uh boxing.

00:14:47.120 --> 00:14:50.480
You'll see kids from actually Northern California, Southern California.

00:14:50.559 --> 00:14:55.039
We actually have some teams coming from uh I believe Nevada and Oregon.

00:14:55.279 --> 00:15:00.480
And uh that will start uh March 15th and 16th.

00:15:00.720 --> 00:15:03.600
And I'm sure we'll see a lot about it on your Facebook page.

00:15:03.679 --> 00:15:11.679
You know, you have a Facebook page, an Instagram page, and that's a great way for people to look at the pictures, see what goes on, and uh also to get in touch with you.

00:15:12.000 --> 00:15:13.759
So I'd like to thank you for joining us.

00:15:13.919 --> 00:15:18.559
And uh this is a tremendous program for the city, and I'm really glad to get an update.

00:15:18.639 --> 00:15:24.159
I'm glad to hear the BMX program is uh off and running, and of course the successes of the boxing program.

00:15:24.240 --> 00:15:28.480
I know that the parents are really excited about it, and the city's excited about it as well.

00:15:28.559 --> 00:15:29.919
So thank you so much.

00:15:36.240 --> 00:15:40.000
And now it's time for Hanford Insider Sports with Eric Bentley.

00:15:43.440 --> 00:15:53.519
The quest for back-to-back Division II section titles is still on for the Sierra Pacific girls' basketball team after taking down Centennial and Clovis North last week.

00:15:53.759 --> 00:16:10.320
In Wednesday's quarterfinal matchup with the two-seed Golden Hawks, tied at twenty-eight at the half, it was the third quarter that proved to be the difference as Sierra Pacific outscored Centennial 20-12 in the frame and were able to hang on in the fourth quarter for the 56-53 upset victory.

00:16:10.559 --> 00:16:23.120
Friday's game at six-seed Clovis North was a little less stressful as the Golden Bears held a 28-24 lead at halftime and kept their foot on the gas in the second half in route to the 66-51 win.

00:16:23.360 --> 00:16:41.840
A section title showdown with one seed Bakersfield Christian awaits this week, and the two teams are no strangers to each other as they faced off less than a month ago, with Sierra Pacific getting off to a hot start and withstanding a second half Eagles push for a 60-54 win in that January 31st matchup in Hanford.

00:16:42.080 --> 00:16:48.080
They'll meet again this Friday as a one-seed versus a seven-seed with a central section title on the line.

00:16:48.320 --> 00:16:48.960
6 p.m.

00:16:49.200 --> 00:16:51.600
scheduled tip-off at Selland Arena.

00:16:52.080 --> 00:16:59.679
The Sierra Pacific girls soccer team will also be competing for a section title after making a run in the Division IV bracket.

00:16:59.919 --> 00:17:05.119
In the quarterfinals, the Golden Bears made quick work of the 11-seed Moro Bay three to nothing.

00:17:05.279 --> 00:17:10.960
Then, in the semis, it was an overtime winner that propelled Sierra Pacific over two-seed Templeton.

00:17:11.200 --> 00:17:21.839
Thursday's section title matchup will crew quite a test for Sierra Pacific as their opponent, one-seed Fresno Christian, comes into the match with a 21-1-1 overall record.

00:17:22.079 --> 00:17:25.680
Three-seed Golden Bears and one-seed Eagles kick off at 6 p.m.

00:17:25.839 --> 00:17:27.119
Thursday in Fresno.

00:17:28.319 --> 00:17:34.000
And the Hanford High boys and girls soccer teams both saw their playoff runs come to an end last week.

00:17:34.160 --> 00:17:41.599
The boys fell to 11-seed Sanger West 2-1 in the quarterfinals to finish their season with a 6-8-7 overall record.

00:17:41.759 --> 00:17:54.960
And the girls beat 10-seed Independence 2-0 in the quarterfinals, but were overcome by El Diamante 1-0 in the semis to end their season as CWIL champions with a 17-3-2 overall record.

00:17:55.839 --> 00:18:05.119
And we'll have to wait another week for baseball and softball updates as the Implement weather last week postponed or canceled most of the early season scrimmages.

00:18:05.359 --> 00:18:12.000
No rain in the forecast this week, so the regular seasons should start on schedule, and we'll have updates for you next week.

00:18:12.240 --> 00:18:20.160
As always, if you have a score report or a team update from any level, you can let us know by emailing HanfordInsider at gmail.com.
