Leadership changes take center stage in Hanford as City Manager Mario Cifuentez announces his upcoming departure after nearly five years at the helm. Taking a position in Cottonwood, Arizona, Cifuentez leaves thoughtful advice for his successor: understand the challenges of inevitable growth, listen to the entire community, and remember that Hanford's median age of 32 represents residents who may not regularly attend council meetings. The City Council wasted no time scheduling a special meeting for May 29th to discuss interim leadership and the permanent replacement process.

Meanwhile, community improvements continue with several noteworthy developments. Children's ice skating rates at Winter Wonderland will drop from $16 to $10 per session, increasing accessibility for local families.

The Council is exploring free senior access to the Longfield Center and affordable family membership options. After several delays, the new Live Oak subdivision will feature Hanford's first-ever park with built-in cornhole games, while the long-awaited signal light at 10th Avenue and East Lacey Boulevard should finally be installed next week.

Memorial Day weekend brings the impressive Avenue of Flags to Grangeville Cemetery, featuring 1,034 flags and a Monday ceremony.

Looking ahead to June 7th, two significant events coincide - the Carnegie Museum Car Show bringing 200+ vehicles downtown, and the "Century of Memory" celebration marking the Civic Auditorium's 100th anniversary with historical displays, music, and cake for all attendees. Sports fans can follow local playoff action, with Hanford West baseball advancing to the D4 semifinals and Hanford West softball concluding an impressive season with an undefeated league title despite a narrow playoff loss. 00:00:13.487 --> 00:00:15.833

We're here to celebrate, explore and connect.

00:00:49.710 --> 00:00:51.462
I'm your host, rob Bentley.

00:00:51.462 --> 00:01:02.482
Whether you're new to Hanford or longtime local, this is your source for everything happening in our town, from events and news to conversations with people who make Hanford such a unique community.

00:01:02.482 --> 00:01:04.347
I hope you enjoy the format.

00:01:04.347 --> 00:01:11.483
This week I don't have a guest, but instead I'll give you an expanded report from the Hanford City Council meeting last week.

00:01:11.483 --> 00:01:14.871
Now let's take a look at some of this week's community news.

00:01:14.871 --> 00:01:20.632
I am releasing this episode a little earlier this weekend due to the holiday, of course.

00:01:20.739 --> 00:01:26.533
Monday is Memorial Day and I hope you'll join us at the Marine Corps League Avenue of Flags at the Grangeville Cemetery.

00:01:26.533 --> 00:01:33.052
The flags will go up at 7 am on Saturday morning and remain flying until 2.30 pm on Memorial Day.

00:01:33.052 --> 00:01:36.829
The official ceremony will take place on Monday at 9 am.

00:01:36.829 --> 00:01:41.111
The guest speaker will be Jeffrey Findley and I'll be performing taps.

00:01:41.111 --> 00:01:47.664
They're adding 10 new flags this year, bringing the total up to an impressive 1,034.

00:01:47.664 --> 00:01:51.293
Here's that summary of the Hanford City Council meeting.

00:01:51.352 --> 00:02:01.084
Last Tuesday, the city issued its first ever Celebration of Life Well-Lived proclamation in honor of Emily Carpenter, who recently passed away from cancer.

00:02:01.084 --> 00:02:17.274
She was our reigning Miss Kings County, but she meant so much more to the community with her non-profit Golden Positivity Hanford Police Officer Prieto was also honored for his courageous actions during a recent life-saving emergency call.

00:02:17.274 --> 00:02:22.026
Probably the biggest news no, it was the big news.

00:02:22.026 --> 00:02:32.032
City Manager Mario Cifuentes informed the council that he has accepted a job as City Manager of Cottonwood, arizona, and he'll be relocating in August.

00:02:32.032 --> 00:02:38.805
He and his wife were married there and two of his daughters live there, so it's a great move for the Cifuentes family.

00:02:39.889 --> 00:02:46.008
In a recent interview with the Hanford Sentinel he offered what I felt was great advice to the next Hanford City Council Manager.

00:02:46.008 --> 00:02:55.673
He said come in, get to know the staff and council and understand that some of the biggest challenges that face them are the inevitable growth that's coming to Hanford.

00:02:55.673 --> 00:03:00.671
We have thousands of homes for development in the queue and they have to be prepared for that.

00:03:00.671 --> 00:03:03.906
To listen to the community, the entire community.

00:03:03.906 --> 00:03:08.985
We have 61,000 people and the median age of the community is 32.

00:03:08.985 --> 00:03:18.401
That's not the audience who regularly attends council meeting, so keep a broad view and understanding that there's a larger community out there and that's who we serve.

00:03:18.401 --> 00:03:20.348
I thought that was good advice.

00:03:20.348 --> 00:03:31.860
The council will have a special city council meeting this Thursday, may 29th, to discuss appointing an interim city manager and the process for hiring a permanent replacement for Mr Cifuentes.

00:03:31.860 --> 00:03:35.609
He's been our city manager since November of 2019.

00:03:35.609 --> 00:03:40.704
Congratulations, mario, and thank you for being such a great supporter of the show.

00:03:42.507 --> 00:03:47.617
In other actions, the Council will vote on the updated Master Fee Schedule at the June 2nd meeting.

00:03:47.617 --> 00:03:55.699
All changes are pending final approval at the next Council meeting, so if you have a concern, be sure to contact your Council member ahead of time.

00:03:55.699 --> 00:04:07.781
One notable change is that the children's rates for ice skating at Hanford's Winter Wonderland will drop from $16 a session to just $10 a session, affording more children the ability to ice skate.

00:04:07.781 --> 00:04:14.425
The council is exploring more access opportunities for seniors to the Longfield Center, making it free.

00:04:14.425 --> 00:04:18.334
They're also exploring options for inexpensive family memberships.

00:04:18.334 --> 00:04:28.910
As for the lighting at the Bob Hill Youth Athletic Facility, council directed staff to provide a proposal using general fund reserves to replace the failing lights.

00:04:28.910 --> 00:04:38.017
This has been a concern of parents during this past season Over several delays of the public hearing about the new Live Oak subdivision in southwest Hanford.

00:04:38.605 --> 00:04:43.185
The Council finally reached a deal with San Joaquin Valley Homes for extensive park upgrades.

00:04:43.185 --> 00:04:52.759
In lieu of redesigning the streetlights, the new five-acre park will have picnic arbors, grills and built-in cornhole games A first for Hanford.

00:04:52.759 --> 00:04:59.778
Finally, the Council received an update about that signal light at 10th Avenue and East Lacey Boulevard.

00:04:59.778 --> 00:05:01.047
Cross your fingers.

00:05:01.047 --> 00:05:04.877
It sounds as if that pole arrives this week and will be installed next week.

00:05:04.877 --> 00:05:10.478
The Public Works Department wanted to thank everyone for their patience during the extended repair process.

00:05:10.478 --> 00:05:16.413
Now let's take a look at this week's community calendar.

00:05:16.413 --> 00:05:22.077
At this week's Thursday Night Marketplace it's Family Fun Night with a classic rock cover band Jaded.

00:05:22.077 --> 00:05:28.295
The Kings Players production of Eat your Heart Out is now on at the Temple Theater.

00:05:28.295 --> 00:05:33.435
For more information about the production, including times and tickets, visit kingsplayersorg.

00:05:37.466 --> 00:05:43.129
The downtown Hanford Car Show hosted by the Carnegie Museum of Kings County will be held on Saturday, june 7th.

00:05:43.129 --> 00:05:45.733
Over 200 cars are expected.

00:05:45.733 --> 00:05:57.372
There'll be a pancake breakfast inside the Civic Auditorium, food trucks in the Bastille parking lot, a DJ playing all your favorites, vendor booths in the park and activities for the kids.

00:06:02.473 --> 00:06:13.778
Next Saturday, june 7th is also the date of the century of memory celebration marking the 100th anniversary of the dedication of the hanford civic auditorium.

00:06:13.778 --> 00:06:27.358
This special centennial event at 3 pm will bring together residents, families and visitors to honor the rich legacy of the civic auditorium and reflect on the history, culture and spirit that has shaped Hanford over the past 100 years.

00:06:27.358 --> 00:06:35.892
There'll be historical displays, videos, a ceremony featuring the John Phillips Sousa Tribute Band, and everyone gets a piece of cake afterwards.

00:06:35.892 --> 00:06:39.495
The ceremony is free and everyone is invited to attend.

Now let's go to Eric for the Hanford Insider Sports Report for this week.

00:07:06.795 --> 00:07:16.536
And now it's time for Hanford Insider Sports with Eric Bentley.

00:07:25.225 --> 00:07:30.634
Baseball and softball playoffs continue to move along, so let's check in on our remaining teams.

00:07:30.634 --> 00:07:43.105
We'll start with baseball, where, after taking down Nipomo in round one of the D4 playoffs, five-seed Hanford West hit the road on Wednesday to take on four-seed Chowchilla Tied at one.

00:07:43.105 --> 00:07:48.317
After three innings, the Huskies erupted for eight runs in the fourth to take a 9-1 lead.

00:07:48.317 --> 00:08:01.254
The Tribe would not go away, though, scoring in each of the final three frames, but a two-run Hanford West sixth inning proved to be the difference, as the Huskies got the round two upset, taking down Chowchilla 11-9.

00:08:01.254 --> 00:08:23.379
Seniors Landon Silva and King Mitri paced the Hanford West offense with three RBI apiece in the win, and the win meant it was on to a matchup at one seed Lemoore on Friday and, despite a decent outing from Josh Martins on the mound, the only Huskies offense was a pair of Landon Silva singles, as Hanford West fell to Lemoore in the semifinals 2-0.

00:08:23.379 --> 00:08:32.538
The late playoff run gives a somewhat positive finale to a 13-15 overall year for the Huskies, with a third-place league finish.

00:08:34.419 --> 00:08:45.456
Hanford High Baseball took down Independence in round one and, thanks to a 15-2 upset in their half of the bracket, the Bullpups played host to 15-seed Hoover on Wednesday.

00:08:45.456 --> 00:08:56.775
Unfortunately for the Bullpups, though not overpowering, the Patriots stayed hot as eight Hoover hits combined with four Hanford High errors resulted in the 7-4 Patriots victory.

00:08:56.775 --> 00:09:02.403
High errors resulted in the 7-4 Patriots victory.

00:09:02.403 --> 00:09:06.956
The Bullpup season comes to a close with a 14-15 overall record and a fourth-place WIL finish Sticking with Hanford High.

00:09:06.956 --> 00:09:19.349
But over to softball, where the six-seed in the D3 playoffs traveled to Kalinga to take on the three-seed Horned Toads on Tuesday and, unfortunately for the Bullpups, there were some parallels to the baseball team's game.

00:09:19.349 --> 00:09:31.043
Kalinga wasn't overpowering and Hanford High actually out-hit the Horned Toads 6-4, but a pair of Hanford High errors loomed large as Kalinga went on to shut out the Bullpups 3-0.

00:09:31.865 --> 00:09:36.433
Hanford High's season comes to a close with a 10-16-2 overall mark.

00:09:36.433 --> 00:09:43.749
To a close with a 10-16-2 overall mark and after an undefeated league title earned them the one seed and a bye.

00:09:43.749 --> 00:09:47.722
In the Division II playoffs, Hanford West played host to nine-seed Edison on Tuesday.

00:09:47.722 --> 00:09:54.385
The Tigers struck first with a three-run top of the first, forcing the Huskies to play from behind all game long.

00:09:54.385 --> 00:10:02.047
Neither team saw any offense until the bottom of the sixth when a two-RBI Kieran Nunes double pulled the Huskies to within one.

00:10:02.047 --> 00:10:07.484
But they would not get any closer, falling to Edison in round two by a score of 3-2.

00:10:07.484 --> 00:10:17.537
Despite not picking up a win in the playoffs, Hanford West finishes a nice season going 19-7 overall with that undefeated Tri-County Kings League title.
