00:01:24.879 --> 00:01:28.000
Check it out on my website at HanfordInsider.com.
00:01:28.879 --> 00:01:34.000
Congratulations to Jillian Rogers for being selected as Miss Kings County 2026.
00:01:34.879 --> 00:01:38.640
Selected as Miss Kings County Outstanding Team was Kaylee King.
00:01:39.280 --> 00:01:44.640
Congratulations to both of these young women who will go on to represent us in the Miss California pageant.
00:01:45.840 --> 00:01:48.159
The Hanford City Council met last Tuesday.
00:01:48.319 --> 00:01:52.640
In the afternoon study session, they heard the Winter Wonderland final report.
00:01:52.959 --> 00:01:57.840
The event netted$48,000 that will be reinvested into park improvements.
00:01:58.400 --> 00:02:01.120
We'll hear more about that from Brad Albert next week.
00:02:02.159 --> 00:02:06.719
They also reviewed plans for having on-site fuel at the Hanford Airport once again.
00:02:07.519 --> 00:02:20.400
In the evening study session, they decided to move forward with an additional property purchase agreement of property along 6th Street to add to the land available for the new public safety building at the corner of 7th and Harris Streets.
00:02:21.120 --> 00:02:27.520
Finally, they had a chance to hear about a mid-year amendment to add an additional building inspector to the city staff.
00:02:28.080 --> 00:02:37.599
We hope to hear a complete report soon in the City Council update from council members, which they post on social media and I repost here on my channels.
00:02:39.680 --> 00:02:42.639

00:04:40.480 --> 00:04:46.319
Today on the Hanford Insider Podcast, we're talking about the future of education right here in our community.
00:04:46.480 --> 00:04:52.000
And joining us now is Superintendent John Raven from the Pioneer Union Elementary School District.
00:04:52.079 --> 00:04:52.879
How are you doing, John?
00:04:53.120 --> 00:04:53.839
I'm doing great.
00:04:53.920 --> 00:04:54.800
I'm happy to be here.
00:04:55.120 --> 00:04:55.600
It's great.
00:04:55.759 --> 00:05:04.560
Hey, uh Pioneer Schools have long been known for strong academics, dedicated teachers, and especially a deep connection to the families that they serve.
00:05:04.800 --> 00:05:14.480
And we'll talk about what's happening in the district today and the opportunities for students uh in the future and why education plays such an important role in the future of Hanford.
00:05:14.639 --> 00:05:19.519
So, John, if I remember right, uh you started as a teacher in Hanford Elementary, yeah?
00:05:19.759 --> 00:05:20.639
Yes, that's correct.
00:05:20.879 --> 00:05:32.639
I started my teaching career teaching fourth grade at Jefferson Elementary in Hanford, which then led me to um Pioneer in 2000 to become a teacher at there in fourth grade.
00:05:32.879 --> 00:05:34.399
And that was at Pioneer Elementary.
00:05:34.800 --> 00:05:36.639
Frontier Elementary wasn't even built yet.
00:05:36.879 --> 00:05:37.279
That is correct.
00:05:37.360 --> 00:05:39.040
It was at Pioneer Elementary School.
00:05:39.120 --> 00:05:42.800
And at that point, the middle school, Pioneer Middle School didn't exist either.
00:05:42.879 --> 00:05:44.319
It was all one campus.
00:05:44.720 --> 00:05:51.120
Then you had the opportunity to open up a brand new school uh near 13th in Grangeville.
00:05:51.199 --> 00:05:53.439
Then it was called Frontier Elementary.
00:05:53.600 --> 00:05:56.160
So tell us about the experience of opening that school.
00:05:56.560 --> 00:06:00.879
So it was kind of a unique experience uh becoming a teacher in Pioneer.
00:06:00.959 --> 00:06:05.920
Uh I moved up to be the assistant principal at Pioneer Elementary School.
00:06:06.160 --> 00:06:14.720
And then when they opened the middle school, I had two years, a year and a half, roughly, uh, to be the assistant principal there at middle school.
00:06:14.879 --> 00:06:21.839
So when the opening came up for Frontier Elementary to become a principal, I thought that was a good opportunity to put in.
00:06:22.000 --> 00:06:29.439
I was able to start that in 2008, being the founding principal of Frontier, and spent the next 10 years in that position.
00:06:30.079 --> 00:06:34.240
So tell us about your path to the superintendent position.
00:06:34.800 --> 00:06:39.680
Well, after 10 years as principal, we're a smaller district.
00:06:39.839 --> 00:06:45.279
So I was looking to expand my wings and further my leadership opportunities.
00:06:45.360 --> 00:06:56.720
So I ended up taking a position in Central Union in L'Amour and was there a few years, transitioned to be the assistant superintendent at L'Amour Elementary School District.
00:06:57.040 --> 00:07:05.199
And I got to the opportunity to apply and ultimately got the position as superintendent back here at Pioneer.
00:07:05.439 --> 00:07:08.399
So it's kind of a full circle for me.
00:07:08.560 --> 00:07:08.800
Yeah.
00:07:09.120 --> 00:07:17.439
In that being here as a teacher, as well as having my own children go through Pioneer and attend through eighth grade.
00:07:17.519 --> 00:07:22.639
And now having the opportunity to come back and serve in this role is something that I think is pretty unique and special.
00:07:22.959 --> 00:07:25.040
Does uh education run in your family?
00:07:25.120 --> 00:07:27.360
How did you first become involved in education?
00:07:27.519 --> 00:07:29.439
What inspired you to become a teacher?
00:07:29.759 --> 00:07:31.040
That's a good question.
00:07:31.199 --> 00:07:38.959
Uh when I started my career growing up as a student myself, it was not a very positive experience.
00:07:39.120 --> 00:07:42.079
I had a very challenging, I was a very challenging student.
00:07:42.319 --> 00:07:45.360
I had a lot of energy and didn't know how to channel that energy.
00:07:45.519 --> 00:07:48.399
So I can relate to a lot of our students growing up.
00:07:48.560 --> 00:07:54.079
And actually, when I went to college, the one thing I thought I did not want to be was a teacher.
00:07:54.319 --> 00:08:00.240
I ended up fighting it and had to spend an extra year in college because I knew I didn't want to be a teacher.
00:08:00.319 --> 00:08:05.040
And then finally took an intro to teaching class and knew that's what I was meant to do.
00:08:05.199 --> 00:08:06.079
There was no fighting it.
00:08:06.160 --> 00:08:07.759
And so moved forward from there.
00:08:08.000 --> 00:08:17.360
I do have teachers, cousins, lots of relatives that are in the field of education, some locally as well, some educational leaders within the county.
00:08:17.519 --> 00:08:18.959
So that's always nice too.
00:08:19.120 --> 00:08:28.800
But it was one of those things that it was a very deep personal choice that I made and knew that education, working with students and families is what I was meant to do.
00:08:29.360 --> 00:08:33.600
Well, I know you're going to do a great job here at Pioneer Union Elementary School District.
00:08:33.679 --> 00:08:38.399
I've already heard lots of great things uh about your leadership and the way things are going.
00:08:38.480 --> 00:08:52.320
But I know that it comes with a lot of challenges, not only just a new position uh for you, but also the challenges that um being the superintendent in this strict district is because of the growth of Hanford.
00:08:52.480 --> 00:08:54.159
And I know that that's a huge issue.
00:08:54.320 --> 00:08:56.159
So let's let's start with that.
00:08:56.320 --> 00:09:03.679
I know there's a lot of neighborhoods going in around town, and and they're definitely affecting the enrollment trends in the district.
00:09:03.840 --> 00:09:05.919
So, uh how what are your plans for that?
00:09:06.080 --> 00:09:12.080
What what does the board see as the future of Pioneer as far as uh facilities?
00:09:12.480 --> 00:09:13.679
Well, absolutely.
00:09:13.840 --> 00:09:18.000
Being a new superintendent, this is my first year in a superintendency.
00:09:18.080 --> 00:09:20.000
There's quite a learning curve.
00:09:20.159 --> 00:09:31.200
Um, once again, though, knowing that I had been in the district before and it was kind of coming home, a lot of the people that I work with, um teachers, even here in the district office, I had worked with in the past.
00:09:31.279 --> 00:09:33.279
So that made it a little more comfortable.
00:09:33.519 --> 00:09:35.360
Working with a board is a new experience.
00:09:35.440 --> 00:09:47.919
And I can say I have a wonderful supportive board that I could not ask for better to allow me to grow during this first year to really implement their vision for the district.
00:09:48.000 --> 00:09:54.240
So meeting with each of them individually in the beginning of the year, find out what their priorities are and go from there.
00:09:54.480 --> 00:10:00.000
With the growth in Hanford, there absolutely is growth and it's experiencing growth over time.
00:10:00.159 --> 00:10:03.919
But I think in the next few years, we're going to see a real influx.
00:10:04.080 --> 00:10:07.200
So we are planning in our district boundaries.
00:10:07.440 --> 00:10:12.799
I'm currently working with a developer to purchase land for a new school.
00:10:12.960 --> 00:10:19.039
By the time they have their uh development done, we're talking about 900 units.
00:10:19.279 --> 00:10:20.720
So we know it will be there.
00:10:20.879 --> 00:10:33.360
So navigating all of that is new, but wanting to ensure that we're in line with that development as students come, we're prepared to accept them and fulfill our duty of educating them.
00:10:33.600 --> 00:10:44.960
So, really, right now, there's a lot of planning going on behind the scenes, a lot of meetings, um, finances, figuring out what's going to work and what the needs of our district are going to be in the near future.
00:10:45.279 --> 00:10:46.480
Yeah, that's great to hear.
00:10:46.559 --> 00:10:51.919
Uh, definitely it is an exciting time for Hanford and um the Pioneer District.
00:10:52.159 --> 00:10:58.559
What are some programs that you're especially proud of that are going on, or maybe programs that you have lined up for the future?
00:10:58.879 --> 00:10:59.519
It's a great question.
00:10:59.600 --> 00:11:01.440
I always love to brag about the districts.
00:11:01.679 --> 00:11:08.240
You know, all three of our pioneer schools have received the California Distinguished School Award at some time or another and more than once.
00:11:08.480 --> 00:11:12.799
Our schools have been recognized for character and civic education programs.
00:11:12.960 --> 00:11:21.919
We have a strong focus on early literacy and laying a foundation for our students, um, both academically and socially and emotionally.
00:11:22.159 --> 00:11:35.759
And we try to provide opportunities and leadership, athletics, um, music, and extracurricular activities as well, and expanding our student services and supports to meet the ever-changing needs of our students.
00:11:36.000 --> 00:11:37.840
So I think we do a good job with that.
00:11:38.000 --> 00:11:48.879
We have counselors at each of our sites, nurses at each of our sites, and really the core of what makes our district special is really the people.
00:11:49.200 --> 00:11:59.679
Um, and when I see people, I'm talking about our staff, our teachers, our custodians, our district office staff, everybody, our bus drivers, as well as our students and our families.
00:12:00.000 --> 00:12:05.440
And really building and working to strengthen that is a priority for me.
00:12:05.519 --> 00:12:08.320
The culture, the connection with families.
00:12:08.559 --> 00:12:11.759
There are certain things that make Pioneer special, and that's one of them.
00:12:11.919 --> 00:12:21.039
Um, it had always been a strong relationship with families, having students and families that feel supported and feel good coming onto our campus.
00:12:21.200 --> 00:12:27.200
So everything that we're doing in the leadership at each of our sites, know my expectation and what I want for our district.
00:12:27.440 --> 00:12:32.559
And really, that is to provide that strong educational foundation for our students.
00:12:32.720 --> 00:12:40.639
We have tremendously dedicated teachers, provide a safe environment, and really help our students and families reach their potential.
00:12:40.799 --> 00:12:45.679
So having the supports in place to do that is really important.
00:12:45.759 --> 00:12:51.600
And I think that that's been a focus for some years and will continue to be a focus as we move forward in the future.
00:12:53.519 --> 00:13:00.559
Having worked in the district, I know that technology is uh a very important piece um of education these days.
00:13:00.639 --> 00:13:09.360
And I know that there's been uh a lot of investment in the uh infrastructure of the internet um uh within the schools and the county system.
00:13:09.759 --> 00:13:17.600
And uh can you tell us a little bit about maybe the ways that you use technology in the classroom and also to communicate with your families?
00:13:18.639 --> 00:13:19.360
Absolutely.
00:13:19.519 --> 00:13:29.919
You know, we're in an age that technology is a powerful tool, but the most important part of education will always be that relationship between the teachers and the students.
00:13:30.159 --> 00:13:37.039
But in doing so, we want to prepare our students for a future that we don't know what it's going to look like at this point.
00:13:37.200 --> 00:13:45.759
With the evolution of technology moving so quickly, we try to keep up and prepare them for a world that may look very different than what it looks like today.
00:13:45.919 --> 00:13:48.000
So for us, it is a priority.
00:13:48.159 --> 00:14:00.320
Um, we are continually looking for things from just continued facility improvements as far as installing cameras to ensure the safety of all of our students, which is being done this year.
00:14:00.480 --> 00:14:12.240
We're expanding technology and safety systems across the district, even to our buses, um, with a new bus boss program that goes out to let our parents know where students are on the bus.
00:14:12.720 --> 00:14:22.720
Definitely using our student information systems to get information to parents, our websites, each school, as far as social media as well.
00:14:22.960 --> 00:14:27.120
Each school district, excuse me, each school has that as well as the district.
00:14:27.279 --> 00:14:35.279
So, really trying to keep our parents connected to the school so that they know where to go to find the information that they need is really important.
00:14:35.679 --> 00:14:38.960
We also utilize a lot of technology in classrooms.
00:14:39.200 --> 00:14:42.240
These students are technology natives.
00:14:42.399 --> 00:14:47.120
They've grown up in a world that is very different from the world that I grew up in.
00:14:47.360 --> 00:14:53.120
They were used to using technology at a level at which it's just natural for them.
00:14:53.279 --> 00:15:08.399
So for us in education to keep up with that and incorporate it in ever-changing ways to keep our students engaged in what's happening and use it as a tool to improve our instruction uh is always something that we strive to do.
00:15:09.039 --> 00:15:11.919
John, we're gonna get real here for just a few moments.
00:15:12.080 --> 00:15:20.799
Uh, we read in the newspapers and online about student behaviors in the classroom, on the school bus, on the way home from school.
00:15:20.879 --> 00:15:23.759
And uh Pioneer is no stranger to those headlines.
00:15:23.919 --> 00:15:33.679
And uh we know that uh the district has put some things in place to kind of improve student behaviors, and uh I'd like to hear a little bit about the strategies that you have for that.
00:15:34.000 --> 00:15:34.639
Absolutely.
00:15:34.799 --> 00:15:39.440
Um, you know, behavior is always a concern uh in any school.
00:15:39.519 --> 00:15:47.039
And our prior our priority is always being to provide a safe and supportive school for all of our students.
00:15:47.279 --> 00:15:53.679
Having shared a little bit about myself for a moment, I was a student that struggled with behavior.
00:15:53.919 --> 00:16:02.240
I had on a report card, you know, Johnny has ants in his pants, or Johnny is, I can see that he'd be a lot of fun at the beach.
00:16:02.399 --> 00:16:04.559
He's not so much fun in the classroom.
00:16:04.720 --> 00:16:18.480
Uh and when I reflect upon that and I look at some of the students that I can really relate to, it's really working with the tools that we have to ensure that our teachers were seeing beyond the behavior of our students.
00:16:18.799 --> 00:16:31.200
So often, students can be seen as that behavior, and the student gets lost in that, that they're overshadowed by their behavior, which is usually going to be tied to a reason.
00:16:31.360 --> 00:16:33.279
Behavior is communication.
00:16:33.679 --> 00:16:36.240
We just don't always know what is being communicated.
00:16:36.320 --> 00:16:45.519
And it's our responsibility to do so, to find out what's wrong, to ensure that the student has their needs met, to build a program that they're successful in.
00:16:45.679 --> 00:17:04.079
Now, in doing so to address that, it really is a part of professional development, to ensure not only that we're providing our students with what they need, but we're also providing our teachers and our staff with what they need to be successful with those sometimes um challenging students.
00:17:04.319 --> 00:17:34.720
Now, that being said, this year we have partnered from the beginning with a couple of different agencies to support that and come in and provide us with parent nights, provide us and our staff with ongoing in-the-moment coaching so that they can see and get feedback on what's working and what's not working, both for the class as a whole, but also to address the needs of particular students that uh we need maybe some assistance to be able to support.
00:17:34.960 --> 00:17:38.480
But it's something that we address and we take very seriously.
00:17:38.720 --> 00:18:03.920
Every student has a right to an education, and we balance that by ensuring that students are heard and valued and those that maybe struggle or have some behavioral concerns that arise, that we're there to support them, that we don't give up on those students, that they are kids, that we're not going to let that behavior determine who they are or what they are.
00:18:04.079 --> 00:18:10.319
In Pioneer, we're really laying the foundation for much more than just academic success.
00:18:10.480 --> 00:18:18.720
We lay the foundation for social, emotional success as well as how students view themselves, whether they are good or whether something's wrong.
00:18:19.119 --> 00:18:27.759
If they are struggling to behave, uh, we want to help them see that they can reach their potential and that we're here because we care about them and we believe in them.
00:18:28.000 --> 00:18:42.720
So I think really taking a proactive approach to behavior is what's most important in ensuring that our teachers have that support and they feel the support as they move forward to meet the needs of our students.
00:18:42.880 --> 00:18:46.160
And it goes beyond the classroom as well.
00:18:46.319 --> 00:19:02.160
We want to connect those kids with adults on campus that could be a custodian, it could be a librarian, someone so that kids have someone safe at all times that they can connect with at a deeper level, which can really help to impact their behavior in a positive way.
00:19:02.640 --> 00:19:20.319
I'm hopeful as we move forward that we continue to see growth in our students and we're providing them the lessons and the examples and the models to have appropriate behavior in all different settings of their life, whether that be at school, at home, or in public.
00:19:20.799 --> 00:19:21.440
Well, that's great.
00:19:21.599 --> 00:19:24.000
I know you've been working very hard on that.
00:19:24.160 --> 00:19:30.640
And uh the perception is one thing, and reality is another thing uh quite often as we uh as we hear.
00:19:30.880 --> 00:19:40.880
So uh let's close with just maybe some shout-outs to your staff and uh people that have helped you adjust to this position and are helping keep the vision alive.
00:19:41.200 --> 00:19:47.519
Well, I started this year um at our kickoff breakfast with a theme for our year.
00:19:47.680 --> 00:20:00.000
Um, when I applied for the position and I spoke to people, my history in the district really had people excited that Pioneer can go back to what it once was, this great district.
00:20:00.160 --> 00:20:09.759
And I really focused on while we can't go back in time, we can definitely carry what made Pioneer special with us as we move forward into the future.
00:20:09.920 --> 00:20:13.440
And one of those things, my theme for the year was the heart of Pioneer.
00:20:13.519 --> 00:20:20.079
And the heart of Pioneer is what truly makes this district special, and that is the people that make up our district.
00:20:20.240 --> 00:20:28.400
And when I say that, I'm talking about all of our district staff, including teachers, classified staff, but our parents and our students as well.
00:20:28.559 --> 00:20:37.279
So that heart of Pioneer is something that connection, being connected with our students, being connected with families, being connected with our community.
00:20:37.440 --> 00:20:42.319
We always have a high turnout with community nights or carnivals, that sort of a thing.
00:20:42.400 --> 00:20:53.440
And I think that's really, really important to know about Pioneer because it has a, we have a, we have a long tradition, uh, very strong academics and strong relationships with families.
00:20:53.599 --> 00:21:01.119
And what makes me most proud is the people who make up this district, the true heart of Pioneer.
00:21:01.279 --> 00:21:06.240
And it's what continues to make our schools such a special place for students to learn and grow.
00:21:06.319 --> 00:21:11.440
And it's really all about the relationships that we build and the people that are within our district.
00:21:11.519 --> 00:21:14.480
So it's just an honor to be back in Pioneer.
00:21:14.640 --> 00:21:16.559
It feels like I'm coming home.
00:21:16.799 --> 00:21:26.559
I'm excited to be here and do the work that needs to be done to continue the foundation that's already been laid, to continue the great traditions within our district.
00:21:26.880 --> 00:21:28.000
That's wonderful, John.
00:21:28.400 --> 00:21:39.279
I uh I've said it several times already on today's broadcast, but uh I'm so happy for you and so happy for the district that things are going well and you're definitely on the right path.
00:21:39.599 --> 00:21:40.000
Thank you.
00:21:40.079 --> 00:21:41.279
I appreciate that.
00:21:45.680 --> 00:21:49.359
Well, now it's time for Hanford Insider Sports with Eric Bentley.
00:21:54.319 --> 00:21:59.839
We'll start on the diamond at baseball, where a pair of teams are off to an undefeated start in league play.
00:22:00.559 --> 00:22:13.200
The Sierra Pacific baseball team, after losing their first five games of the year, have rattled off five wins in a row and are off to a three-o start in league play after taking down Kingsburg and Kerman last week.
00:22:13.359 --> 00:22:25.519
Both games saw crooked numbers being the difference as the Golden Bears put up six runs in the fourth inning of their ten to three victory over Kingsburg and five runs in the sixth inning of Thursday's six-to-one win at Kerman.
00:22:26.000 --> 00:22:32.319
Three games on the schedule this week for Sierra Pacific, starting Monday with a non-league showdown at Hanford High.
00:22:32.559 --> 00:22:41.599
So let's talk about the Bullpup baseball team off to a two and oh start in league play and four and four overall after taking down Dainuba twice last week.
00:22:41.759 --> 00:22:47.680
Six to two in Tuesday's game in Hanford and five to one in Thursday's tilt at Dainuba.
00:22:47.839 --> 00:22:53.519
After Monday's clash with Sierra Pacific, the Bullpups will play Telera Union for a pair of midweek games.
00:23:05.680 --> 00:23:15.039
Thursday's game at CVC saw a comeback fall just short as the Huskies lost to the Cavaliers six to five and now sit at four and five overall on the year.
00:23:15.279 --> 00:23:19.519
Two league matchups with Emmanuel and Selma await the Huskies this week.
00:23:20.720 --> 00:23:24.880
Out to softball where it was a tough week for all three softball teams.
00:23:25.039 --> 00:23:30.240
The only squad to pick up a win was the Sierra Pacific softball team going one and two on the week.
00:23:30.400 --> 00:23:38.720
The win came in shootout fashion, twelve to eleven, as the Golden Bears were able to stave off a late Taler Western surge to seal the victory.
00:23:38.960 --> 00:23:48.160
The losses came to Taler Union and Kerman as Sierra Pacific now sits at two and six on the year, with two non-league matchups with Lamore and Kalinga this week.
00:23:48.720 --> 00:23:57.599
The Hanford West softball team was only in action once, but fell to Golden West 11-6 to find themselves 7-3 overall on the year.
00:23:57.839 --> 00:24:09.039
The Huskies will start next week's action at Hanford High, where the Bullpups are four and seven overall, coming off of a five-to-four loss to the same Golden West team that the Huskies also lost to last week.
00:24:09.200 --> 00:24:14.319
We'll see who can bounce back in that crosstown matchup at Hanford High on Tuesday.
00:24:14.559 --> 00:24:24.559
