00:04:45.233 --> 00:05:06.934
Pleasure to be here with Caitlin Sheets, who is the executive director of the Children's Storybook Garden and Museum.

00:05:06.934 --> 00:05:08.346
How are you doing today, Caitlin?

00:05:08.346 --> 00:05:10.286
Doing good, Thank you.

00:05:10.286 --> 00:05:17.872
So, Caitlin, the Children's Storybook Garden and Museum has blossomed into this awesome place that has a lot of uses.

00:05:17.872 --> 00:05:30.036
I'll let you speak to that, but I know that when it started the people that started the museum and the storybook portion of it they had a certain idea in mind.

00:05:30.036 --> 00:05:35.290
Can you tell us a little bit about the initial opening of the venue and then maybe how it's changed over the years?

00:05:36.439 --> 00:05:55.302
Yeah, so Judy Waite is the founder of the Children's Storybook Garden and she had this dream of this beautiful location many years ago and it took a while to get everything in place and start the building process and getting the getting the structures in the area.

00:05:55.302 --> 00:06:10.004
But in 2017 the garden doors opened and it was just the storybook side of the garden, so just the side where we see like our small playhouses and they're all literacy themed houses.

00:06:10.004 --> 00:06:20.702
So we have our topiary garden and we have the barn and the three little pigs, and then we have our Monet and Van Gogh houses and then we have the old Burr farmhouse.

00:06:20.702 --> 00:06:26.661
That was also on the property and that's kind of where the garden started back in 2017.

00:06:26.661 --> 00:06:37.406
And it was a place for our families to come and enjoy and learn about literacy and just play and have fun, and a place for the community to get together.

00:06:37.987 --> 00:06:43.365
And now, as we've expanded out, we've now added additional things.

00:06:43.365 --> 00:06:46.291
I mean, we've been doing field trips from the beginning.

00:06:46.291 --> 00:06:55.086
So we do field trips with all the local schools, kind of in the beginning of the school year and then towards the spring and the second half of the school year.

00:06:55.086 --> 00:07:02.867
It's a lot of schools who come from, like even Bakersfield and Fresno and travel.

00:07:02.867 --> 00:07:07.014
Some travel by Amtrak to get to us and we do field trips with them.

00:07:07.014 --> 00:07:08.961
So it's really expanded.

00:07:08.961 --> 00:07:09.423
We're now.

00:07:09.423 --> 00:07:12.408
We're also now a venue option for people.

00:07:12.408 --> 00:07:20.971
So we do not only events for children even though children is in our name, we we have events for adults as well.

00:07:20.971 --> 00:07:24.762
We do tea parties, we have our murder mystery each year.

00:07:24.762 --> 00:07:31.065
We're a place for people to have their celebrations, whether it be birthday parties, baby showers or weddings.

00:07:31.065 --> 00:07:37.470
But, yeah, the garden has really grown and expanded on everything it's done over the years.

00:07:38.651 --> 00:07:43.714
So, Caitlin, the springtime is a busy time at the Storybook Garden and Museum.

00:07:43.714 --> 00:07:45.896
I know you have a lot of events planned.

00:07:45.896 --> 00:07:48.076
Can you tell us about some of the events you have coming up?

00:07:51.920 --> 00:07:57.639
So from this weekend this past weekend we had the garden tour come through and we've been getting ready for the murder mystery.

00:07:57.639 --> 00:07:59.286
That is a sold out event.

00:07:59.286 --> 00:08:04.387
It is our fourth annual murder mystery party with the Temple Theater.

00:08:04.387 --> 00:08:12.790
They put on the show and we do dinner and guests just come and they try to solve the mystery of the murder.

00:08:12.790 --> 00:08:16.687
That's coming up on April 20th but it is a sold out event.

00:08:16.687 --> 00:08:22.565
So if you're interested, it comes around every April and it's a real fun event for the garden.

00:08:23.146 --> 00:08:29.228
And then on April 27th we are going to be having Farm Day in the morning.

00:08:29.228 --> 00:08:31.033
That is going to be from 10 to 12.

00:08:31.033 --> 00:08:39.514
We're going to have author Trisha Stone, Shoemaker, come with her chickens, Poppy and Macy, and they will be having a meet and greet.

00:08:39.514 --> 00:08:42.284
She'll be sharing her newest book, Proudly Poppy.

00:08:42.284 --> 00:08:46.933
It's just going to be a fun event for families to come and enjoy.

00:08:46.933 --> 00:08:48.746
We'll have a donation snack bar.

00:08:48.746 --> 00:08:50.727
We'll have different activities for the kids.

00:08:50.727 --> 00:08:57.530
We're going to have some farm animals out there and that one is just included with your regular admission.

00:08:57.530 --> 00:09:01.030
There's no extra fee and you don't have to pre-register for that one.

00:09:01.701 --> 00:09:05.730
And then that evening we are doing our second annual.

00:09:05.730 --> 00:09:19.571
We do it with the Hanford High S Clubs and all three of the schools are involved this year and they we do our special needs prom and this year's theme is country nights at the garden.

00:09:19.571 --> 00:09:29.971
It is for high school and up, for people who have special needs, who are high school and up, and so if they want to register for that they can contact us at the garden.

00:09:29.971 --> 00:09:40.571
We have flyers out with the rehab and different places just advertising that event coming up, and then we also always have on Mondays our little sprouts.

00:09:40.571 --> 00:09:42.486
That is at 1030.

00:09:42.486 --> 00:09:45.554
It's Miss Chris is the lead teacher on that.

00:09:45.554 --> 00:09:47.363
She's usually the teacher doing that class.

00:09:47.363 --> 00:09:49.149
It's a story and a craft.

00:09:49.149 --> 00:10:03.225
It's a great time to come and just enjoy the garden space during our open hours and then, as well as getting to have a little bit of time with others and enjoying the garden, so that's actually what I was going to ask you about.

00:10:03.307 --> 00:10:10.816
If someone wanted to visit the Storybook Garden and Museum during your regular hours, what times are you open and then what's the admission?

00:10:12.142 --> 00:10:17.072
So our current hours are Monday and Wednesday, 9 am to 12.

00:10:17.072 --> 00:10:23.812
Tuesday, thursday and Friday we're open from 1 to 4, and Saturdays we're open from 10 to 2.

00:10:23.812 --> 00:10:27.826
From 1 to 4 and Saturdays we're open from 10 to 2.

00:10:27.826 --> 00:10:34.427
We will be changing those hours for summer because it just gets a little bit too hot, but we'll be posting that on our social media our Instagram and our Facebook when we do change those hours.

00:10:34.427 --> 00:10:39.400
And then the admission is $5 a person, two years old and up.

00:10:39.400 --> 00:10:41.722
We also offer memberships.

00:10:41.722 --> 00:10:44.924
We have our family membership, which is $85.

00:10:44.924 --> 00:10:53.572
That gets you seven people in to the garden for the whole year, from the date that you sign up for your membership until the next year on that date.

00:10:53.572 --> 00:11:06.542
So that's a great option and it gets you in, and usually for special events there's discounted rates if you have the membership as well membership as well.

00:11:06.562 --> 00:11:14.144
Yeah, I've seen that and I really think that's emphasizing the importance of membership and supporting the venue, because it definitely is a very important place for not only children but adults as well.

00:11:14.144 --> 00:11:18.212
And how can they find out more information about the website?

00:11:18.212 --> 00:11:19.981
I know you're active on social media.

00:11:19.981 --> 00:11:23.807
Can you tell us your website and some of your social media pages, can you?

00:11:23.907 --> 00:11:25.168
tell us your website and some of your social media pages.

00:11:25.168 --> 00:11:28.192
Yeah, our Instagram and our Facebook are both Garden Hanford.

00:11:28.192 --> 00:11:33.158
And then our website page is childrenstorybookgardenorg.

00:11:35.442 --> 00:11:44.389
So we know that you have a board in place and they make a lot of important decisions and they do a lot of legwork, but I understand you have a tremendous group of volunteers.

00:11:44.389 --> 00:11:51.591
Can you tell us a little bit about your volunteers, maybe give a few shout outs and then tell us about how to get involved?

00:11:52.220 --> 00:11:55.250
Yes, yes, we have some really wonderful volunteers.

00:11:55.250 --> 00:12:00.711
So some of the ways that you can help us with volunteering are being part of our field trip team.

00:12:00.711 --> 00:12:27.442
We do field trips every Tuesday, thursday and Friday mornings, and so we have teams of people who come in and you don't have to plan the curriculum, because Sharon has been an amazing help to our curriculum for our field trips and so she shares the plan with us of what we're going to do, and then you just have to help execute that plan, and so we don't leave you hanging, you just you'll.

00:12:27.442 --> 00:12:30.369
You'll know what to do so you can help with field trips.

00:12:30.369 --> 00:12:36.956
And then we also have a lot of great gatekeepers as volunteers, but we could use a few more in that area.

00:12:36.956 --> 00:12:51.250
As a gatekeeper, you're welcoming our guests in friendly face for them to see as they come into the garden, and you're getting either their membership or their admission fee and just kind of telling them a little bit more about the garden.

00:12:51.740 --> 00:12:55.892
And then we also utilize our volunteers for different work days.

00:12:55.892 --> 00:13:10.231
We used to do Saturday morning work days the first Saturday of every month, but it kind of slowed down, and so now when we have a work day, we like to just schedule those on the calendar according to what works for the groups who are coming in.

00:13:10.231 --> 00:13:16.533
That can be helping with the gardening and weeding and cleaning up around the space.

00:13:16.533 --> 00:13:34.919
We also utilize our volunteers for our special events, so just helping with setup and cleanup, and sometimes it's service, sometimes it's being involved with a guest or we've even had some of our volunteers dress up in costume and be and be a part of the event in that way.

00:13:34.919 --> 00:13:45.035
So we have a lot of different options for volunteering and you can fill out a form on our website and then that will come to me and I'll reach out to you about volunteering.

00:13:45.779 --> 00:13:49.904
So the website is childrenstorybookgardenorg Caitlin.

00:13:49.904 --> 00:13:54.870
Thank you so much for joining us and congratulations on a successful venue.

00:13:54.870 --> 00:14:01.196
This Children's Storybook Garden Museum has been such an important in Hanford and I know it will be for years to come.

00:14:01.196 --> 00:14:01.976
Thank you so much.

00:14:02.840 --> 00:14:03.403
Thank you.

00:14:03.403 --> 00:14:04.306
Thank you for having us.

00:14:10.640 --> 00:14:14.211
And now it's time for Hanford Insider Sports with Eric Bentley.

00:14:27.639 --> 00:14:30.320
We start with baseball, as all three teams were in action both at home and on the road in the home-and-home part of the league schedules.

00:14:30.320 --> 00:14:34.591
Hanford High was dominant in their two games against Dinuba.

00:14:34.591 --> 00:14:49.793
The offense was the star in Monday's Game 1, as the Bullpups easily picked up a 19-6 victory at home, and then they hit the road and took down the Emperors on their home field, cruising to an 11-5 victory.

00:14:49.793 --> 00:14:56.253
Hanford High improves to 11-8 overall and 5-2 in the WIL.

00:14:56.253 --> 00:15:11.562
In the WIL, sierra Pacific split their two matchups, with Kingsburg falling on the road on Tuesday 10-4, before getting their revenge at home on Thursday, routing the Vikings by a final score of 16-2.

00:15:11.562 --> 00:15:19.936
The Golden Bears remain at .500 in league play, at 3-3, and now are 13-7 overall.

00:15:19.936 --> 00:15:24.982
League play at 3-3 and now are 13-7

00:15:25.024 --> 00:15:25.183
overall.

00:15:25.183 --> 00:15:36.292
As for Hanford West, their week played out the opposite of Sierra Pacific, as the Huskies picked up a 4-2 win at home over Selma on Tuesday, before the Bears bit back on their home field, handing the Huskies a 7-0 loss.

00:15:36.292 --> 00:15:59.229
Hanford West is still looking to find some rhythm, as they stand at 7-12 overall, 2-4 in league action, and we'll stay with Hanford West, though on the softball side, where unfortunately, the Huskies were not able to pick up a win in their two matchups last week, falling to Reedley 8-2 and Kingsburg 4-0.

00:15:59.229 --> 00:16:05.303
Last week, falling to Reedley 8-2 and Kingsburg 4-0.

00:16:05.303 --> 00:16:07.149
They now sit at 9-9-1 overall and are still looking for their first league

00:16:07.168 --> 00:16:07.230
win.

00:16:07.230 --> 00:16:15.366
Hanford High split their two games last week, besting Dinuba 5-3 before falling to Tulare Union 9-3.

00:16:15.366 --> 00:16:21.255
The Bullpups find themselves one and one in league action, eight and eleven overall.

00:16:21.255 --> 00:16:35.749
Sierra Pacific also went one and one last week in two very different games, as they were taken down by Kingsburg 13 to two before bouncing back and beating CVC 12 to two.

00:16:35.749 --> 00:16:44.605
The Golden Bears sit at .500 in league play and 6-12 overall, and sticking with Sierra Pacific.

00:16:44.605 --> 00:16:52.393
In some offseason news, victor Chavarin Jr has been named as the new varsity girls' head basketball coach.

00:16:52.393 --> 00:17:01.815
A natural fit for him, as he's a Sierra Pacific alum and has served as an assistant under Amy Bush with the program for the last seven years.
