00:00:09.115 --> 00:00:12.946
Rob will give us an update on the busy community calendar.
00:00:12.946 --> 00:00:15.932
Then later I'll be back with your sports report.
00:00:15.932 --> 00:00:20.483
This is the Hanford Insider for Monday, may 19th.
00:00:36.494 --> 00:00:45.521
This is the Hanford Insider, the podcast, where we dive into what makes our community tick, from local stories and hidden gems to conversations with people shaping our neighborhood.
00:00:45.521 --> 00:00:48.331
We're here to celebrate, explore and connect.
00:00:48.331 --> 00:00:49.976
I'm your host, rob Bentley.
00:00:49.976 --> 00:01:00.392
Whether you're new to Hanford or longtime local, this is your source for everything happening in our town, from events and news to conversations with people who make Hanford such a unique community.
00:01:00.392 --> 00:01:02.002
I hope you enjoy the format.
00:01:02.002 --> 00:01:04.045
Now let's take a look at this week's community news.
00:01:04.045 --> 00:01:04.346
Community.
00:01:04.346 --> 00:01:04.906
I hope you enjoy the format.
00:01:04.906 --> 00:01:05.947
Now let's take a look at this week's community news.
00:01:05.947 --> 00:01:08.471
The Hanford City Council will meet on Tuesday, may 20th.
00:01:08.471 --> 00:01:18.968
In the afternoon study session, the council will receive a presentation that relates to the housing regulations and will review the final draft budget for 2025-2026.
00:01:18.968 --> 00:01:31.031
During the regular meeting at 7 pm, they'll have a proclamation for National Public Works Week May 18th through the 24th and they'll have a special proclamation honoring the life of Emily Carpenter.
00:01:31.031 --> 00:01:39.694
In general business, they'll be reviewing the master fee schedule, with fee increases to recover costs of services provided by the city.
00:01:40.540 --> 00:01:47.713
An item likely to get a lot of attention is the demolition of the building on the northeast corner of the intersection of Dowdy Street and 6th Street.
00:01:47.713 --> 00:01:52.731
The property owner has asked for a permit so that they may proceed with demolition.
00:01:52.731 --> 00:01:56.370
This is not city property and the city is not demolishing the building.
00:01:56.370 --> 00:01:58.302
It's not a historical building.
00:01:58.302 --> 00:02:03.293
It's just an old building that hasn't been maintained for many years and is literally falling apart.
00:02:03.293 --> 00:02:07.546
The owner of the building must bring it down due to the rapid deterioration.
00:02:07.546 --> 00:02:10.920
If you've driven by the building, you've seen it for yourself.
00:02:10.920 --> 00:02:19.729
It was also disappointing to hear this week that the National Weather Service office in Hanford is having to slash its hours due to new federal policies.
00:02:19.729 --> 00:02:25.086
The Hanford station will no longer be able to give us 24-7 coverage Each night.
00:02:25.086 --> 00:02:29.995
The monitoring conditions will now be handed off to neighboring offices hundreds of miles away.
00:02:29.995 --> 00:02:41.033
For more information about how the National Weather Service operates in Hanford, be sure to go back to the January 20th episode of the Hanford Insider, where I had a chance to interview Felix Castro.
00:02:50.360 --> 00:02:51.603
Now let's take a look at this week's community calendar.
00:02:51.603 --> 00:02:53.306
At this week's Thursday Night Marketplace, it's Grower Appreciation Night.
00:02:53.306 --> 00:02:55.673
The band performing will be the cover band Monsanto.
00:02:55.673 --> 00:03:06.425
On Thursday, may 22nd, king's Behavioral Health is sponsoring Breaking the Stigma Conference at the Glad Tidings Church from 9 am to 4 pm.
00:03:06.425 --> 00:03:14.671
Topics will cover the intersection between substance use and mental health to provide better support, foster recovery and save lives.
00:03:17.581 --> 00:03:23.264
The King's Players production of Eat your Heart Out opens this weekend at the Temple Theater and runs through the middle of June.
00:03:23.264 --> 00:03:28.015
The play tells the story of an out-of-work actor named Charlie who is working as a waiter.
00:03:28.015 --> 00:03:33.068
He has many hilarious encounters with characters he meets in the Manhattan restaurants he works in.
00:03:33.068 --> 00:03:38.411
For more information about the production, including times and tickets, visit kingsplayersorg.
00:03:38.411 --> 00:03:46.893
Showing at the Fox Theater on Saturday night is the Twilight Saga Eclipse, beginning at 7 pm.
00:03:46.893 --> 00:03:49.668
For more information, visit foxhanfordcom.
00:03:53.080 --> 00:03:57.953

00:04:33.608 --> 00:04:39.492

00:04:39.492 --> 00:04:42.107

00:04:42.107 --> 00:04:45.744

There's still time to register your ride at carnegiecarshowcom.
00:05:04.819 --> 00:05:09.240
Saturday June 7th at 3 pm is also the date of the Century of Memories celebration, marking the 100th anniversary of the dedication of the Hanford Civic Auditorium.
00:05:09.240 --> 00:05:19.987
This special centennial event will bring together residents, families and visitors to honor the rich legacy of the Civic Auditorium and reflect on the history, culture and spirit that has shaped Hanford over the past 100 years.
00:05:19.987 --> 00:05:22.367
That has shaped Hanford over the past 100 years.
00:05:22.367 --> 00:05:30.853
There'll be historical displays, videos, a ceremony featuring the John Philip Sousa Tribute Band, and everyone gets a free piece of cake afterwards.
00:05:30.853 --> 00:05:34.216
The ceremony is free and everyone is invited to attend.
00:05:34.216 --> 00:05:42.663
For more information about the event, go to hanfordcagov slash civic100.
00:05:42.685 --> 00:05:45.511
Many people have asked me how to get listed on our community calendar.
00:05:45.511 --> 00:05:50.641
It's really simple.
00:05:50.641 --> 00:05:53.591
If you have an event coming up and you'd like some help getting the word out, let's work together.
00:05:53.591 --> 00:05:55.456
Send your information to hanfordinsider at gmailcom.
00:05:55.456 --> 00:05:59.333
Be sure to subscribe to my weekly newsletter to get a complete calendar of events.
00:05:59.333 --> 00:06:02.281
It's the most comprehensive community calendar available.
00:06:02.281 --> 00:06:25.490
Well, what an opportunity it is to visit with Paul Rhodes from Gonzales Faso Florist in Hanford, and we are so fortunate to be here especially the week after Mother's Day, one of the busiest times of the year, right.
00:06:26.341 --> 00:06:27.766
Yeah, we just started cleaning up.
00:06:27.947 --> 00:06:28.228
Yeah.
00:06:28.228 --> 00:06:32.430
So Paul, tell us a little bit about the history of this floor shop.
00:06:32.430 --> 00:06:37.425
It's been in Hanford for 80 years this year, so what's that been like?
00:06:37.920 --> 00:06:38.904
80 years in April.
00:06:38.904 --> 00:06:43.925
Well, let's see, it's been awesome, the group of customers we have.
00:06:43.925 --> 00:06:52.447
We saw an older clientele, then we saw their children, we're seeing great grandkids.
00:06:52.447 --> 00:06:55.925
My grandmother used to come here, you know, you hear things like that.
00:06:55.925 --> 00:06:58.288
You did my grandmother's wedding flowers.
00:06:58.288 --> 00:07:07.490
Of course it would have been my grandmother, not me, but I am third generation in here and we've been here since 1945.
00:07:07.490 --> 00:07:11.098
My grandmother started in Tulare in 1939.
00:07:11.098 --> 00:07:24.502
And she just opened a second shop over here with her brother Pete, and sister-in-law Virginia Gonsalves, and she was married to Frank Fossil and that's where the Gonsalves and the Fossil comes from, and that was April 21st or 22nd.
00:07:24.502 --> 00:07:28.463
Married to Frank Fossil, and that's where the Goods office and the Fossil comes from, and that was April 21st or 22nd.
00:07:28.463 --> 00:07:31.266
Off the top of my head, I can't remember, but it's 80 years ago.
00:07:31.406 --> 00:07:34.567
Yeah, so 80 years at this location at 10th and Grainville.
00:07:34.728 --> 00:07:35.288
That's correct.
00:07:35.288 --> 00:07:35.769
Yes, sir.
00:07:35.889 --> 00:07:36.728
That's fantastic.
00:07:36.728 --> 00:07:39.571
So tell us a little bit about the family history.
00:07:39.571 --> 00:07:46.495
You got started there, but let's talk a little bit more about the family history and maybe how you got involved in your family.
00:07:46.954 --> 00:08:03.327
Well, my grandmother had a farm with her two sisters Gonzales M&M Farms out on 16th Avenue, where I lived for 38 and a half years and I worked on the family farm and I got injured.
00:08:03.327 --> 00:08:07.095
And this opportunity, my grandmother was in the hospital.
00:08:07.095 --> 00:08:08.985
She says come in and talk to me.
00:08:08.985 --> 00:08:12.589
And she said I'd like you to take that flower shop over.
00:08:12.589 --> 00:08:16.911
She says you're not going to get rich, but you'll make a good living.
00:08:16.911 --> 00:08:22.812
And so I left the family farm, came into here and been here ever since.
00:08:22.812 --> 00:08:25.750
That was 25 years ago, the year 2000.
00:08:25.750 --> 00:08:27.543
December of 2000,.
00:08:27.543 --> 00:08:29.290
Actually it'll be 25 years in December.
00:08:29.980 --> 00:08:33.220
So over all that time, there's been a lot of change in the florist industry.
00:08:33.220 --> 00:08:35.950
With online ordering, sourcing your flowers.
00:08:35.950 --> 00:08:38.673
How has the transition to the new technology been for the shop?
00:08:38.673 --> 00:08:39.840
Fantastic?
00:08:41.142 --> 00:08:53.279
We saw a lucrative change in implementing Internet sales and the development of a website places to buy flowers.
00:08:53.279 --> 00:08:58.393
When they were totally domesticated flowers, you got them off the coast.
00:08:58.393 --> 00:09:00.908
We're paying really high prices.
00:09:00.908 --> 00:09:06.269
We do a lot of importing out of Colombia and out of Ecuador.
00:09:06.269 --> 00:09:12.131
I could have roses cut in the field and to my door in 72 hours, Wow.
00:09:12.914 --> 00:09:14.239
Yeah, it's pretty, pretty neat.
00:09:14.239 --> 00:09:15.061
That's pretty crazy.
00:09:15.061 --> 00:09:21.721
So the people that come into your shop, they're looking for arrangements for weddings, funerals.
00:09:21.721 --> 00:09:24.325
What are some of the other reasons people come into the shop?
00:09:24.946 --> 00:09:28.009
Oh, you know the typical birthday anniversary.
00:09:28.009 --> 00:09:30.333
You know those kind of things.
00:09:30.333 --> 00:09:33.607
Proms, proms are a huge thing.
00:09:33.607 --> 00:09:35.947
Then you know, of course there's all the holidays.
00:09:35.947 --> 00:09:44.725
People would think that Valentine's is my biggest day or Mother's Day, and it's actually not.
00:09:44.725 --> 00:10:01.049
Christmas is, and the reason you laugh, and everybody laughs when I tell them that because Valentine's comes in two days and Mother's Day in two days, and it's just an influx of crazy.
00:10:01.049 --> 00:10:03.169
You have to hire five, six extra people and it's wild for quite a while of crazy.
00:10:03.169 --> 00:10:04.095
You have to hire five, six extra people.
00:10:04.095 --> 00:10:08.648
That just, and it's wild for quite a while.
00:10:08.648 --> 00:10:16.148
But at Christmas it starts December 1st, and it spreads, stays constantly busy till the 24th.
00:10:16.440 --> 00:10:26.643
Yeah, I guess, when you're thinking about it, you've got people that want arrangements for their tables, or maybe they're visiting relatives like you said high school dances High school winter formals.
00:10:26.682 --> 00:10:27.245
That's correct.
00:10:27.245 --> 00:10:29.683
Yeah, we have a very lucrative December.
00:10:29.683 --> 00:10:39.706
We've been here so long that I used to say, okay, we're going to have a slow time here, and it really hasn't slowed up.
00:10:39.706 --> 00:10:44.846
We have such a large clientele and that's the benefit.
00:10:44.846 --> 00:10:49.947
It would be hard for somebody to start a flower shop today and actually make a living.
00:10:49.947 --> 00:10:51.620
There's been lots of people trying to do it.
00:10:51.620 --> 00:11:02.789
We've had flower shops come and go all over the place, but we have such an old, built-up clientele that it's been good for us.
00:11:03.455 --> 00:11:05.662
Well, it's certainly been good to Antford for 80 years.
00:11:05.662 --> 00:11:08.663
Yeah yeah, so let's talk about a typical day.
00:11:08.663 --> 00:11:12.666
How many employees do you have and what are some of the things that they do during the day?
00:11:13.195 --> 00:11:21.630
Well, we normally had six, and that includes myself and my wife, so us two and four extras, and now we're down to five.
00:11:21.630 --> 00:11:27.104
And uh, and that comes with the new increase in wages.
00:11:27.104 --> 00:11:28.746
The new increase in wages.
00:11:28.746 --> 00:11:37.624
Just 10 years ago, you know, you were paying 10 an hour and now you're up to 17 bucks, $18.
00:11:37.624 --> 00:11:44.477
Some of my employees make you know and so, uh, uh, they, it is, somebody had to go.
00:11:44.477 --> 00:11:46.142
We just have to take on.
00:11:46.142 --> 00:11:49.775
I've had to come back in, kind of send my retired in 17.
00:11:49.775 --> 00:11:53.664
I had to come back and and fill some shoes, you know.
00:11:54.024 --> 00:11:55.995
Yeah, so delivery is a big part of it as well.
00:11:56.115 --> 00:11:56.836
Absolutely.
00:11:56.836 --> 00:11:58.960
Pretty much everything's delivered.
00:11:58.960 --> 00:12:04.870
You know we have 10% of our business is walk-in clientele.
00:12:04.870 --> 00:12:12.022
The other 90% comes over the telephone and via the web, and so that's kind of interesting.
00:12:12.022 --> 00:12:15.525
Now, of course, at Mother's Day and Valentine's that's different.
00:12:15.525 --> 00:12:17.160
You know the percentage has changed quite a bit.
00:12:17.160 --> 00:12:17.663
Yeah, that's different.
00:12:17.663 --> 00:12:19.048
You know, those percentages change quite a bit.
00:12:19.149 --> 00:12:25.386
Yeah, so there's hours on the door that you're open, but people, your website's always open.
00:12:25.707 --> 00:12:26.229
That's correct.
00:12:26.229 --> 00:12:30.846
It's an employee in itself, you know, and so that's a good thing.
00:12:30.846 --> 00:12:34.341
It takes on the.
00:12:34.341 --> 00:12:39.750
Unfortunately, it's like a kiosk at McDonald's that they have now.
00:12:39.750 --> 00:12:48.947
It eliminates a job for somebody that can sit up here and take orders, but we have pictures on there and they change constantly.
00:12:48.947 --> 00:13:01.126
Right now, after Mother's Day, there's usually a limited product available, so we cut that way back to a designer-cho choice type website for about three or four days.
00:13:01.148 --> 00:13:02.149
Yeah, that's great.
00:13:02.149 --> 00:13:07.727
You had mentioned earlier about the availability of getting some of these flowers, beautiful flowers.
00:13:07.727 --> 00:13:10.302
What is your source?
00:13:10.302 --> 00:13:12.864
You talked about, you know, working the farm when you were young.
00:13:12.864 --> 00:13:14.942
Where do these flowers come from?
00:13:15.296 --> 00:13:16.621
Oh, you're going to enjoy this.
00:13:16.621 --> 00:13:32.998
You know the coast of California used to grow thousands of acres of flowers but with the new law changes of the legality of marijuana, they have closed down the flowers and started growing marijuana.
00:13:32.998 --> 00:13:36.543
So we've had to get our stuff out.
00:13:36.543 --> 00:13:41.971
We've had to find other sources through Columbia and Ecuador, and you know different places.
00:13:41.971 --> 00:13:46.284
I know that's funny, but it's just the absolute truth.
00:13:46.284 --> 00:13:54.269
I went to an old plant supplier that my grandmother used to go to in Santa Ynez, up there around the Solvang area.
00:13:55.557 --> 00:14:02.643
And I went to go through his warehouses and he had six warehouses and he says, yeah, start here, go through.
00:14:02.643 --> 00:14:09.748
And he says, see what you like, I can either come up there and get them or they'll deliver down to the area and I meet them somewhere.
00:14:09.748 --> 00:14:14.345
They will park somewhere in 10 or 20 floors to go and pick up their product.
00:14:14.345 --> 00:14:16.188
So I went through.
00:14:16.188 --> 00:14:17.421
It didn't look very good.
00:14:17.421 --> 00:14:22.717
I didn't like what I was seeing, without using any names, but I thought gosh.
00:14:22.717 --> 00:14:23.522
So I went there.
00:14:23.522 --> 00:14:24.620
I thought, well, maybe there's more.
00:14:24.620 --> 00:14:28.546
I went to the second through sixth warehouse and it was all marijuana.
00:14:28.546 --> 00:14:30.642
But I had never seen it before.
00:14:30.642 --> 00:14:36.543
I didn't know what it looked like and I said I think this is marijuana and so I wasn't supposed to be back there.
00:14:36.543 --> 00:14:38.029
I didn't know, and so I wasn't supposed to be back there.
00:14:38.029 --> 00:14:38.673
I didn't know.
00:14:38.673 --> 00:14:44.311
He just looked at me up and said what are you doing back there?
00:14:50.820 --> 00:14:53.875
So what are some things that the average customer may not realize about the floral industry, about how it works?
00:14:53.875 --> 00:15:05.524
Well, one thing is I ran the family farm for many years and we did a lot of shoveling, a lot of hard work, a lot of long days, and I never let that farm as tired as I am when I leave here.
00:15:05.524 --> 00:15:10.778
Uh, there's a lot of work behind the scenes that people don't know about.
00:15:10.778 --> 00:15:40.490
You go to bed at night with the work on your mind, you know, and you wake up in the morning you haven't had a restful night's sleep because you're worried about the work the next day, and so the only difference is the rejuvenation of my mind happens easier with sleep than the physical labor from the farm, and so there are lots of things that go on that are hard to deal with.
00:15:40.490 --> 00:15:47.244
You know legitimate competition like Walmart, save Mart, that's just competition, that happens.
00:15:47.244 --> 00:15:57.626
But when you have 20 new street vendors come in on some of your most lucrative days, it makes it really difficult to be competitive.
00:15:57.626 --> 00:16:05.403
Our product lasts longer through a processing that we have in the back of rehydrating flowers when they come in.
00:16:05.403 --> 00:16:10.657
So we try to say there's going to be more longevity within your product.
00:16:12.339 --> 00:16:27.542
But I think the biggest thing is the problem that exists to you, the public, in the fact that they're not collecting taxes, they're not paying business license.
00:16:27.542 --> 00:16:32.826
So that new 1% tax we just got put on us it doesn't get put on them.
00:16:32.826 --> 00:16:34.836
You know it's.
00:16:34.836 --> 00:16:49.131
I've been saying this area, just in Hanford, they lose $10,000 to $15,000 in tax revenue from those day or two, you know, by all those booths that are illegitimate.
00:16:49.131 --> 00:16:53.438
What I mean by illegitimate is you want to have a booth out there?
00:16:53.438 --> 00:16:54.158
That's great.
00:16:54.158 --> 00:17:07.411
Well, go buy a business license, get the correct permitting, pay your taxes, you know, offer credit card sales instead of just tax and do what you got to do to be legitimate.
00:17:07.411 --> 00:17:07.951
That's all.
00:17:08.372 --> 00:17:13.960
Yeah, so this is my favorite part of the interview, where I give you the opportunity to give everybody a shout out.
00:17:13.960 --> 00:17:17.365
Who makes this place so successful for the last 80 years.
00:17:17.365 --> 00:17:21.471
Who are some of the obviously your ancestors there.
00:17:21.471 --> 00:17:26.874
You know who has made this so special that it's been able to last for 80 years.
00:17:27.154 --> 00:17:32.048
Well, of course, the one that was in here daily was my grandmother, mary Fossil.
00:17:32.048 --> 00:17:36.365
She's the main reason this lasted that long and the reason I'm here.
00:17:36.365 --> 00:17:40.316
Her husband, frank Fossil, ran the Tulare store while she came over here.
00:17:40.316 --> 00:17:46.488
But without her partners, virginia and Pete Gonsalves, she would have probably never done it.
00:17:46.488 --> 00:17:52.526
And so they had the nursery year along with the flower shop in 1945.
00:17:52.526 --> 00:17:58.103
That closed sometime in the nineties and the nursery became unlucrative anymore.
00:17:58.103 --> 00:18:00.808
You know, it became unprofitable.
00:18:00.808 --> 00:18:08.861
They could still break even deal, but there was no sense in doing that much work to break even Over the years.
00:18:09.434 --> 00:18:14.483
Frima Rose sat at a desk here, my grandmother's bookkeeper for 53 years.
00:18:14.483 --> 00:18:22.807
Ray Alviso, her head designer, worked here, as long as I can remember, for probably 40 years.
00:18:22.807 --> 00:18:31.190
But me personally, when my grandmother offered it to me, she was in the hospital and she was sick.
00:18:31.190 --> 00:18:33.000
She says I'd like to keep this going.
00:18:33.000 --> 00:18:34.663
I had gotten hurt on the farm.
00:18:34.663 --> 00:18:35.946
She said would you like to buy it?
00:18:35.946 --> 00:18:38.301
Come in and purchase this from me and keep it going.
00:18:38.301 --> 00:18:48.890
I said yes, but I had to make a conversation first with her head designer, beverly Scott at the time, who without her I wouldn't have been here today.
00:18:48.890 --> 00:18:52.343
Without Beverly I would have shut the doors.
00:18:52.343 --> 00:18:58.241
At that time I never came in Beverly, stayed with me for almost 10 years and then she retired.
00:18:58.241 --> 00:19:03.439
She became in her 60s, in retirement age, and said I'm done, paul, this is enough.
00:19:03.439 --> 00:19:04.461
I've had a good time.
00:19:04.461 --> 00:19:09.976
And she was instrumental in us still being here today.
00:19:10.919 --> 00:19:14.548
Today we've had a lot of great employees over the years.
00:19:14.548 --> 00:19:23.768
You know Nancy Clay and Emily, who is now Phillip, she was Klein, and Dora Salazar, and I can go right.
00:19:23.768 --> 00:19:27.423
Tj Davis, go right down the line, my own children.
00:19:27.423 --> 00:19:36.439
You know lots of them, tyler, and today we have Kelly Pugh and Tristan Henson oh, what's your married name?
00:19:36.439 --> 00:19:42.699
Morris, tristan Morris, and my son, gus.
00:19:42.699 --> 00:19:48.480
He does all the delivering and backroom help and stuff, and then my wife and I.
00:19:48.480 --> 00:19:51.126
Without my wife, we'd already have the doors closed, amen.
00:19:53.075 --> 00:19:56.425
Well, I want to thank your wife for helping me set this up without your knowledge.
00:19:58.316 --> 00:19:59.801
Yeah, I got to get put on the spot.
00:20:00.676 --> 00:20:02.222
It's all good, great stories.
00:20:02.414 --> 00:20:04.001
Yeah, no, it is a good story.
00:20:04.001 --> 00:20:06.001
There's so much more on top of it.
00:20:06.001 --> 00:20:09.740
I mean, go through the years of the stories, I've had more fun.
00:20:09.740 --> 00:20:19.686
One day I was in here and I was purchasing this from my grandmother at the time and I told her we had a lot of business going on.
00:20:19.686 --> 00:20:22.398
I said I got a secret I want to tell you and you can't tell anybody.
00:20:22.398 --> 00:20:26.637
She says hey, kid, wait a minute, I can keep a secret, just fine.
00:20:26.637 --> 00:20:27.980
It's the people I tell it to.
00:20:27.980 --> 00:20:28.741
They can't keep it.
00:20:28.741 --> 00:20:32.055
She says I thought that was great.
00:20:33.557 --> 00:20:34.097
That's so great.
00:20:34.097 --> 00:20:47.125
Well, paul, thank you so much for hanging out this afternoon, and it's been so great learning about the history of the nursery and flower shop over the 80 years in Hanford, and we wish you all the best in your future endeavors.
